- From "Who's Who in Canadian Jewry", p. 323, "Simon, George, Mayor of Alexandria, Ontario. Born: 3 Mar 1890, Branfort, Ontario. Son of Ettie and Isaac Simon. Single. Business: former president, Simon's General Store. Mayor of Alexandria, Ontario, for over 15 years. Was the first Jew and the youngest mayor to be elected in Canada to that office in 1918. Organizer and past Secretary, Progressive Conservative Association for over 15 years, Alexandria President, Alexandria Industrial Buildings Ltd; Chairman Park and Recreation Ctee; Chairman, Area Planning and Developing Board; Chairman, Public Utilities Commission; Director, Eastern Ontario Development Association, headquarters in Ottawa. Senior Warden and member Alexandria Lodge No 438 AF & AM; Maxwell Chapter, AF & AM; Alexandria Lions Club; Alexandria Curling Club; Alexandria Lawn Bowling Club. Received recognition for dedicated and humanitarian services to the community. Served with the Reserve Army during World War II. Parents settled in Detroit, before coming to Branfort in the 1880's as the first Jews in that city. They eventually re-located in 1897. Rel Affil. Shaar Hashomayim. Res: 36 St George St E.
