History/Biographical Born on September 23, 1890, in Montreal, Dr. Alton Goldbloom was a prominent pediatrician in Canada. He was married to Annie Ballon and had two children, Dr. Richard and Dr. Victor, and six grandchildren. He obtained his medical degree from McGill University in 1916. He held many posts in the medical community, including Physician in Chief at the Children's Memorial Hospital, Montreal, Chief of Pediatrics at the Jewish General Hospital, and Professor of Pediatrics and Chairman of the Department at McGill University. He obtained many honorary degrees as well. He was a president of the Canadian Jewish Historical Society and had a deep interest in the Jewish religion. He wrote several books, The Care of the Child, Small Patients, and an autobiography. He died on February 3, 1968. Biography from P0068.
Custodial History The collection was donated by Victor Goldbloom through Jewish Public Library - Archives on August 19, 2009.
Scope & Content Letters, mostly in Yiddish, mostly sent from Russia to Alton Goldbloom's brother in Vancouver, other western Canadian locations, the U.S., and Montreal, a total of 39 documents. One family photo. Very small snapshots taken on a trip to Kovno, Lithuania, in 1928. Relates to Alton Goldbloom's mother, who was a Goldstein. 17 photos
