History Biographical
The Ottawa Jewish Home for the Aged was formed as a provisional body in August, 1955 when a group of interested people met at the home of Mrs. Abraham Lithwick. The first public organizational meeting was held on March 20th, 1956 with Mr. J. C. Horwitz, Q.C. as Chairman. Incorporation followed in 1957. The purpose was to establish accommodation for Jewish elderly people. Hillel Lodge, 125 Wurtemburg Street, Ottawa, opened officially on October 10, 1965 with 29 beds. The Home joined the Ontario Extended Care Program in 1972 and it allowed for extra medical and physical assistance for 19 of its residents. The following year, a third floor with 19 beds was added, increasing the total capacity to 48. The Abraham and Dora Lithwick Chapel was constructed in 1975 to integrate the spiritual and traditional elements within the Home. In April, 1983, an additional 2 beds were approved under the Extended Care Program, bringing that total to 21. In 1998, Hillel Lodge received approval to build a new 100 bed Home. That same year, Hillel Lodge was renamed the Bess and Moe Greenberg Family Hillel Lodge. Yale Greenberg was the first Executive Director of Hillel Lodge, followed by Stephen Schneiderman in 1985. It received accreditation for the first time in 1988, the year a feasibility study was completed examining future growth for a growing Jewish community. The new 100 bed facility, located at 10 Nadolny Sachs Private on the Jewish Community Campus in the west end of Ottawa, known as the Joseph and Inez Zelikovitz Long Term Care Centre in the Bess and Moe Greenberg Family Hillel Lodge, opened on September 24, 2000. An additional 21 beds were officially opened on December 15, 2011 in an unfinished space on the first floor, known as the Joseph and Inez Zelikovitz Pavilion, bringing the total complement of beds to 121. Funding is provided by client fees, the Ottawa Jewish community and the Province of Ontario. Funds are also received from the Home’s Auxiliary, private donation as well as various government grants.
