- History / Biographical
- Saul Tanner arrived in Ottawa during the winter of 1922. He was sponsored by an uncle living in Montreal, Jacob Tenenbaum. Saul came to Ottawa because his older brother Charles was already here. A year later in late December, his wife Fanny (nee Gershon) and daughter Minerva (who was 2 1/2 years old at the time) arrived in Canada from Kobrin (Kobryn), Poland, 40 km north of Brest Litovsk. Saul began as a fruit and vegetable peddler with a wagon and a horse called Blackie. He also shortened his name from Tenenbaum to Tanner. He then moved into a small grocery store business on Holmwood in the Glebe. The advent of large grocery stores eclipsed his business but before that happened, he began buying rental properties. Saul and Fanny had two other children, Morton and Ruth (Simon), both born in Ottawa. Saul brought over two of his younger brothers, Sam and Alec, and two of Fanny’s brothers, Dave and Irwin Gershon from Poland. Minerva graduated from the Ottawa High School of Commerce. In 1942 she married Louis Cohen whom she met on a vacation to Glace Bay, Cape Bretton. They remained in Glace Bay for a few years and then moved to Ottawa where they owned and operated 4 bowling alleys. Minerva was excellent with finances and they prospered. She and Louis had two children, Dr. Steven Cohen in Timmins, Ontario and Linda Weiner who lives in Ottawa.

- Notes
- 1. Saul Tanner was the son of Shlomo Gershon Tenenbaum, of Kobrin, Poland. One of 14 children. Owned a flour mill (see 1-076) 2. Minerva said “ you don’t have to be that clever, just have to learn” when talking about her business success. When her father died, she attended to his estate. 3. When Minerva and her mother went to see “Fiddler on the Roof” her mother could not sit through the production as it reminded her too much of how Jewish people were treated in Kobrin. 4. Tanner family early members of Agudath Israel. Minerva contributed a stained glass window. 5. Charles Tanner operated a men’s tailor shop. Alec Tanner moved on to California.
