History Biographical
Avram (Abraham) Lazarus Florence (1875-1936) was one of Ottawa’s best known Jewish businessmen in his day. Born at Zadik, Lithuania A. L. Florence came to Canada in his early teens. For several years he lived in Hamilton then moved to Ottawa around 1900. Initially he was listed as a junk dealer in the Ottawa City Directory, living at 107 Dalhousie Street and operated his business at 75-77 Dalhousie. Eventually he specialized in supplying paper mills with used paper. The Government of Canada was a major client for the Florence Paper Company Ltd. In his obituary it was wrtten that the "paper industry is a tribute to Mr. Florence’s industry and enterprise, and one of the chief businesses in the factory district around Botelier Street on which the warehouses are located.” At one time the business was located on King Edward Street. Mr. Florence was a past president of the Agudath Achim Congregation, and was one of the prominent members of the congregation associated with the building of the Rideau Street Synagogue in 1912. He was also a strong supporter of the Hebrew Benevolent Society and the Ottawa Talmud Torah Board. He married Lena Pullan who died at the age of 45 in 1925. Ottawa Hadassah named a Lena Florence Chapter for her. They had three sons; Frank, Harry and Jack, and four daughters; Esther (married J. Smith), Rose (married Moses Doctor), Molly (married Alex Betcherman) and Freda. The three sons continued the business with Esther and Rose working in the office. Esther’s son, Avram Smith, also worked in the business. The Florences built a large home overlooking the Ottawa River near Earnscliffe, which was later sold to the Francisans who converted the home into a monastery. In 1985, the paper company was bought by Laidlaw Company.
