History / Biographical
The Witness to History project was developped by the Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre. The first interviews were conducted in the spring of 1994. The Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre’s objective in inaugurating this programme was to record and document as many of the survivors’ histories and experiences as resources permitted. Videotaped interviews are conducted by trained interviewers with emphasis on the survivors’ Holocaust experiences as well as their pre-war lives and their often remarkable post-war efforts to reconstruct normality into their lives in Canada. The Centre’s objective is to continue the Project and provide the facility for those of the Montreal area survivors still willing to come forth and record their experiences towards the education of future generations.

History / Biographical
Bonnie Cleaners Ltd. was owned and operated by Harry and Sylvia Kershman from 1956-1982. Sylvia (nee Bodovsky) Kershman (b. 1926, Ottawa - ) is the daughter of Wolf Bodovsky (b. 1881 - d. 1970) and Kele Leikin Bodovsky (b. 1890 - d. 1973), proprietors of W. Bodovsky Meat Market located in the Byward Market. Sylvia grew up in Lowertown with her two older sisters; Anne Wormann (b. 1913, Russia - ) and Goldie Reva Appelbaum (b. 1922, Ottawa - d. 1977), and attended York St. Public School, Lisgar Collegiate, and Willis Business College. She began working at a young age, first in her parents’ store and then in various fruit stores in the Byward Market. After graduating from Lisgar Collegiate in 1942, she began working for the government of Canada as a clerc, first with the Dominion Bureau of Statistics on Sussex Street, then for the Royal Canadian Air Force. Sylvia participated actively in the Ottawa Civil Service Recreational Association, also known as the RA, and was the RA radio reporter on Radio Station CKCO. Sylvia was a resident of Lowertown for 38 years, and she spoke about her experiences living and working in this neighbourhood at the Ben Karp Memorial Lecture in 2002. Harry Kershman (b. August 21, 1923, Montreal - d. November 20, 1997, Ottawa) was born in Montreal, and served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during WWII. After returning from the war, he moved to Ottawa and joined his brother Judah at Judah’s Capital Commercial Laundry. He worked in clothing retail before establishing his laundry business with Sylvia. Both Harry and Sylvia were active in various Ottawa theatre groups. Sylvia participated in war entertainment shows for the RA and the Royal Canadian Legion, as well as theatre productions with the Royal Canadian Air Force. Both Sylvia and Harry participated in plays put on by the Jewish Theatre Guild and the Jewish Stage Players. The couple met at the Ottawa Hebrew Seniors Association, and were married at Machzikei Hadas Synagogue on July 4th, 1948. They had two sons, Stanley Kershman (b. 1952, Ottawa -) and John Kershman (b. 1955, Ottawa -). In addition to theatre, Sylvia and Harry led the Mogen David Cross-Country Ski Club in 1979, and Harry was president of the Hebrew Seniors Association in 1947. Sylvia was on the Committee on Mental Health of the National Council of Jewish Women in 1953. The Kershmans opened Bonnie Cleaners in October of 1956, at 51 Main Street, in Ottawa East. The couple designed the logo for their business and organized the advertising themselves. Sylvia and Harry regularly held meetings for which Harry acted as president and Sylvia acted as secretary-treasurer. In 1961, the business moved to 1061 Merivale Road, and 1971, a second location was opened at 1181 St. Laurent Blvd. As a dry-cleaning business, Bonnie Cleaners offered cleaning, repair, and fireproofing services for a variety of fabrics and materials. They were contracted multiple times by the Department of Defense and other organizations to perform dry-cleaning and fireproofing services on drapes. Bonnie Cleaners also sponsored a women’s softball team, as part of the Ottawa Women’s Softball League. The Merivale location of Bonnie Cleaners Ltd. was sold in 1981, and the St. Laurent location was sold in 1982. Both owners of the business were active in the wider dry-cleaning world. Harry and Sylvia won Canadian management scholarships from Dow Chemicals two years in a row, in 1963 and 1964, which allowed them to attend the National Institute of Dry Cleaning at Silver Springs, Mayland for four weeks with paid tuition in 1964 (Sylvia) and 1965 (Harry). Sylvia and Harry both completed a course in textiles and fabric analysis, sponsored by the dry cleaners and launderers institute of Ontario, in 1963. Harry Kershman was a member of the Jolly Belin Club, “an exclusive society of dry-cleaners.” He also received an optional Certificate of Qualification in the qualified trade of Dry Cleaner, which involved a written and practical test. Sylvia won a Prestige Builders Award from the National Institute of Dry Cleaning in 1965 “for her educational programs on the skills of the dry-cleaner in Ottawa high schools.”

History / Biographical
Jack Edelson (b. March 21, 1924, Ottawa) was the owner and manager of Jack Edelson Catering. He is the son of Alice (nee Coblentz) Edelson (b. October 15, 1896, Russia, d. December 28, 1972) and Benjamin (Ben) Simon Edelson (b. March 27, 1889 - d. October 12, 1988). Alice and Ben were married in 1912 in New York and had lived in Montreal prior to Jack’s birth, but moved to Ottawa after visiting the city in 1920 and lived on Clarence Street. The Edelsons had seven children; Samuel, Dina, Lillian (Katznelson), Vivian (Caplan), Jack, Shirley, Joyce and Elihu. Jack attended York St. Public School. As an adolescent, Jack joined a newly-formed Jewish Air Cadet Unit called the Ottawa Maccabee Flight, which was sponsored by the War Services Committee of the Ottawa B’nai B’rith. The Cadet unit provided training at Rockcliffe and Uplands air stations. During his training, Jack created detailed model airplanes to help with training exercises. He enlisted in the Air Force during the Second World War, and was one of a number of servicemen to take up an offer from the Department of National Defense to voluntarily continue to serve in the Pacific after hostilities had ended in Europe. After returning to Ottawa, Jack married Freda Davis (b. August 20, 1926 - d. October 16, 1976), daughter of Rachel and Ben Davis, at Adath Jeshurun Synagogue on December 25, 1949. After Freda’s death, Jack was eventually remarried, to Annette Diotte (b. 1938). Jack Edelson Catering catered largely for the Jewish community. They served food at weddings, bar mitzvahs, and private parties, and they frequently advertised in the Ottawa Jewish Bulletin. The catering company worked with Agudath Israel, Machzikei Hadas, Beth Shalom, the Jewish Community Centre, Young Israel, and Temple Israel. They also provided catering for larger events such as the Canada-Israel Committee’s annual conference at the Chateau Laurier. In addition to events, they also provided take-out platters, and holiday meals. For most events, the food was prepared in the kosher kitchen at Agudath Israel Congregation. For much of his career Jack Edelson worked with Yudi Chein, a caterer from Israel who first started working in the catering business in 1992. Yudi initially worked for Jack’s catering company, then later started Yudi Chein Kosher catering, where Jack later worked as a consultant. Jack and Yudi’s combined experience in catering meant that they were able not only to provide the food for events, but also to give advice on music and decor to the hosts. Until the 1990s, Jack Edelson Catering was one of only two kosher caterers in Ottawa, the other being Jack Smith. The catering business initially only catered kosher events, but later expanded into non-kosher catering as well. Jack Edelson expressed frustration in 1995 when the Vaad Hakashrut, which was responsible for supervising kosher food production across the city, introduced a clause stating that caterers would not be permitted to sell non-kosher food or events to Jewish customers. This clause was introduced after Jack Smith’s catering company mistakenly served non-kosher food during an event that was supposed to be kosher, resulting in a number of sanctions placed against him by the Vaad Hakashrut. Jack Edelson protested this decision, on the grounds that many of his Jewish customers did not keep kosher, and he did not feel that he had the right as their caterer to force them to do so. As of 2001, Jack Edelson had been working in the catering business for 40 years, while running a number of other businesses. He opened a restaurant and delicatessen at 177 Montreal Road in 1966, which boasted a coffeeshop/restaurant, a banquet hall which could be rented for large events, and a “Candlelite Dining Room”. In the 1970s, he opened another restaurant at 1208 Wellington Street, called “J’s Steak House & Deli.” The restaurant had live piano music, and was open until 1am, with dancing in the evenings. He operated two food stands 1982 during Winterlude, selling chili and smoked meat sandwiches at two locations between fifth avenue and Dow’s Lake. Annette and Jack Edelson also ran a business called Alpine Industries, which sold air purifiers, in addition to their food services businesses. Jack Edelson’s Catering contributed to various charitable events and organizations in the Jewish Community and in the broader Ottawa community. He donated meals to events such as the Tele-shalom project organized by Temple Israel, and the Bon Appetit meal program for individuals suffering from addiction in 1994. Jack Edelson chaired the dining room committee for the Rideau View Golf Club during its creation in the 1950s. The golf course initially provided a simple lunch counter where sandwiches could be purchased, though food and beverage options were eventually expanded.

Notes
1. The name Diamond Catering came from the Diamond Barbeque restaurant where Jack Edelson was Restaurant manager. The restaurant was owned by the Ages brothers. 2. Diamond Catering was located on Nelson Street near Murray Street. 3. Jack Edelson enlisted on Elgin Street following graduation at Ottawa Tech High School as a cadet, where he had become very interested in aeronautics. Following the war he worked in the watch making business before starting in the restaurant and catering businesses.

History / Biographical
Nathan Evenchick was born in 1892 in Minsk, Russia. As a child he attended cheder close to the family’s goose farm in Volma. In 1905, when he was 13 years old, he was sent to live with his aunt, Nechama Evenchick Bakstansky, in New York. Travelling steerage class he used his older brother Meyer’s papers to enter the United States at Ellis Island. From that point on, ‘Nathan’ was known as ‘Meyer.’ Evenchick cleaned bottles for his aunt, who prepared meals for garment factory workers. Later, he got a job driving a streetcar. He spoke only Yiddish and Russian when he arrived in New York, however, within a few years he had learned enough English to pass the entrance exams for university. Unable to afford tuition, Evenchick decided to travel to Japan with his first cousin Samuel Dorsky in 1914. They established a business selling pearls, jade, fine china and other Oriental products. Evenchick lived in Japan for eight years and then moved to Ottawa where he married Lillian Sugarman from Vilna, Lithuania. They had a daughter, Shirley Fay Lacome (b. 1923 - d. unknown), and then a son, Avrom "Abbey" (b. 1924- d. 2008). Evenchick started a wholesale business importing mostly artificial pearls from Japan, which he sold to various department stores. M. Evenchick Jewelry Ltd. was established in 1922. The company imported cultured pearls and is purported to be the first company in Canada to do so. When trade supplies were cut off in 1939 with the outbreak of the Second World War, his company was the first to produce simulated pearls using finely ground scales of red herring. Evenchick returned to New York to learn how to coat glass beads with pearl coating made from scales and began manufacturing them in a small, cinder block warehouse in the backyard of 232 Chapel Street. Evenchick designed special dipping and drying machinery, experimented with a variety of dipping mixtures, developed his own dyes and worked out many technical difficulties in order to develop a consistently good product. For instance, the pearls would ‘blush’ and lose their lustre when the dip became cloudy due to fluctuations in temperature and humidity. At first, his output was small because of the amount of time spent in research and development, but, eventually, the problems were solved and production increased. In 1941, Evenchick purchased a large house on Albert Street, where he employed 35 women to string the artificial pearls at a quota of 75 strings per day, producing between 700 and 1,000 strings of Evco Pearls per day, plus earrings and bracelets. By 1946, he had tripled his production and supplied 75 per cent of the manufactured pearl export trade to the United States, the United Kingdom, the British West Indies, Peru and Brazil. Evco Pearls were manufactured according to a closely guarded formula developed by Evenchick, which he shared only with his son, Abbey. The Moonglow pearl that first appeared on the market in the fall of 1946 took a full year to develop. In 1950, Abbey Evenchick’s brother-in-law, Bernard Lacome, entered the business after going to the United States to learn how to cast metal for costume jewelry fabrication. The business expanded again in 1958, when M. Evenchick Ltd. moved to 180 Montcalm Street in Hull, Quebec. In 1969, Abbey Evenchick took over the family firm on the death of his father and under Abbey's direction the company produced a full line of costume jewelry that ranged in price from one dollar to $1,500 with exports to the West Indies, Australia, South Africa and the United Kingdom. In 1982, Abbey’s sons, Mark and Brian Evenchick, took over the company, bringing further innovation to the marketplace. They worked with ARC Industries to produce a line of maple leaf pins using copper from the roof of the Parliament buildings when the roof was replaced in 1996. They also started using aboriginal artist Mike Chartier’s unique designs carved first in moose antler then reproduced in pewter and sterling silver. Over time, their Rachel line of costume jewelry expanded to include thousands of broaches, pins, earrings, necklaces and bracelets, which were sold to major Canadian chains including Eaton’s, The Bay and Birks. M. Evenchick Jewelry Inc. offered a full range of services, including in-house design, model-making, casting and plating before the business closed in 2008.

History / Biographical
In 1905, David Mirsky, son of Ottawa's first Rabbi Jacob Mirsky, started bottling spring water that came out of a limestone rock formation on “Nanny Goat Hill” near LeBreton Flats. From those humble beginnings a soft drink empire was born. When David was 14 he entered the workforce as a “newsie,” peddling magazines, snacks and soft drinks on the Canadian Pacific Railway’s Gatineau train. Within five years he had worked his way up to freight agent and started work in the CPR station. It was there in the station that David noticed the incredible volume of soft drinks being shipped from all over the country into Ottawa. He began to wonder why soft drinks couldn’t be manufactured locally. David began to collect glass bottles (which were scarce at the time) and returned them to Bradings Brewery. He eventually was able to arrange a deal with Bradings; in return for bottles David was given permission to build a small shack on the Brewery grounds in LeBreton Flats as well as the right to tap spring water that ran down the escarpment on Nanny Goat Hill, near what is today Booth and Albert Streets. David initially named his company “The Ottawa Bottle and Trading Co.” and his first product was simply a five gallon can of spring water. Deliveries were done by horse and wagon in the summer and by sleigh in the winter. The wagon and sleigh were replaced with trucks in the 1920's. In the 1920's, David noticed the continuous shipments of ginger ale and ginger beer from England, and decided to begin flavouring and carbonating his water. With the introduction of his new products, the company was renamed "Pure Springs," a name that would endure for the next 60 some years. David's early operation was modest, using hand operated equipment in his home in the evenings to develop products. Over the years, David brought his sons into the business; Norman Mirsky, who focused on product development (and who would become president of the company during WWII), and Mervin Mirsky, who focused on sales, merchandise and promotion. John Mirsky, the third son, worked in the business before WWII before setting his sights on legal career which was tragically cut short when he was killed in a car accident. Mervin left the business during World War II to fight in Europe. Upon his return, he briefly entered into the legal field with his twin brother Jack, but it was not long until he returned to the family business. Upon his return, Mervin helped to breathe new life into the soft drink company which had suffered a hit during the 1930's. Under Mervin's direction a variety of expansion plans and innovative ideas were instituted. One of his greatest feats was to develop a formula that would retain carbonation in their drinks for at least 24 hours. The Mirsky’s were also credited with bringing twist caps and soda cans to North America from England. By 1969, Pure Spring had increased sales 3000% over two decades. In April 1969, the company opened a modern, one-story plant on Belfast Road in Ottawa. Pure Spring products could be found across Canada, from the Maritimes, to Alberta and to the Arctic Circle. Outside the country products were sold in the United States, West Indies, Bermuda and Dominican Republic. At its peak, it was said that Pure Spring had annual sales in the $50-million range. Their best known sodas were Ginger Ale, Honey Orange, Gini, Minted Grape and Cream Soda, but products also included One Cal Cola, Brio Chinotti, Black Bing Cherry, Mexican Cream Soda, Spruce Beer, Strawberry, Grapefruit and Lime, and EXPO Chocolate, which was made for a limited time for Expo 67. The Mirsky family eventually sold Pure Spring to Crush International, the soft-drink giant, in the mid-1960’s, though Mervin Mirsky continued to be involved in operations until 1987.

History / Biographical
With hopes of building a better life, brothers David and Abie (Abe) Kardash immigrated to Ottawa in 1926. They brought with them their knowledge of baking bread and used it as a foundation upon which to build their new life in Canada. Prior to opening the Rideau Bakery they were employees of both the Mosion and the Bodnoff families. David and Abie opened Rideau Bakery in 1930 at the corner of Rideau and Nelson Streets and followed recipes that their mother Rivka had used to make bread in the Ukraine. They survived the Depression by employing their brothers, sisters and children. A fire in 1940 in an adjoining building forced the bakery to move to Clarence Street. In the 1950's the Kardash's acquired the neighbouring Le Droit Newspaper building and converted it into the bakery's retail location. The Clarence Street site housed both bakery and retail sites until 1970 when the city expropriated the property. The family then moved the bakery to its current premises at 1666 Bank Street. The present retail site at 384 Rideau Street began operation in 1965. Abie Kardash was married to Sarah (Tziphora) Rosenthal and had one daughter Rose (Taylor). David Kardash had nine children, seven of which became the second generation of the bakery's owners. David’s sons, Louie, Sam, Moe and Issie, took over the business and with the help of three of their sisters, Jennie, Libby and Ann, succeeded in growing and expanding operations. A third generation ran the company. David Kardish can usually be found at the Rideau Street store and his brother, Louis Kardish is at the Bank Street store. Their partner and cousin, "David Kardash (a.k.a. The Bear)" passed away in 1999. The family's fourth generation now helps behind the counter. Rideau Bakery closed offically on June 28, 2019, after 89 years in operation. It was Ottawa's longest standing kosher bakery. To help fill the gap in kosher baking, Farm Boy took over the original Rideau Bakery recipes, bakers and bread starter. Rideau Bakery bread is available at all Farm Boy locations, the first six adopted lovaes were: Light Rye, Caraway Rye, Dark Rye, Pumpernickel, Egg Bread, and Raisin Bread.

History / Biographical
Sam and Rose Edelson began Saro’s (a combination of the names "Sam" and "Rose") in 1955 as a small jewellery and giftware store at 116 Bank Street. Sam had previously worked at Edelson Jewellers on Rideau Street. In 1959, their son Joel joined his father in business after graduating from Lisgar Collegiate. Sam Edelson’s hobby was photography. He devoted a small space in his store window (the first rotating window in Canada) to photography equipment. As the photograph equipment business grew, they began to carry Sony products and opened a second shop in the Billings Bridge Plaza in 1961. In 1963, Saro’s moved from 116 Bank Street to 132 Bank Street. Saro’s was a very service conscious store and knew their regular customers by name. The business closed in 1995 because of the invasion of the out-of-town chains and big box store competition.

History / Biographical
Shaffer’s Ltd. was a clothing store founded by Abraham Shaffer which first opened on Dalhousie Street in 1911. Abraham’s wife, Mary (nee Baslow), noticed that Rideau Street had considerably more business than Dalhousie and encouraged Abraham to move the business. Shaffers gradually expanded to include 143 to 1471/2 Rideau Street and the family lived above the store for some time. In 1961, Shaffer’s celebrated a Golden Jubilee. It was always a family business with both Mary and Abraham Shaffer giving direction. In 1967, Abraham and Mary's sons Sheldon and Milton Shaffer sold to the Caplan family, long time family friends and neighbours on Rideau Street for more than fifty years.

History / Biographical
David Cohen was born in 1918 in Reserve Mines, Nova Scotia. He enlisted for military service which brought him to Ottawa. After serving as a staff sergeant at the old Coliseum in Lansdowne Park, he began working for an elderly shoe store owner. David gradually assumed the managerial duties and in 1946 bought the shop. He moved the shop to Bank Street and renamed the business Vogue Shoes. He later opened a second shoe store on Sparks Street in 1956. Because of copyright laws, David could not remain in business using the name "Vogue." He decided to incorporate his daughter’s name and renamed the shops Judy Jay Shoes. He also expanded in to the earliest shopping malls in the late 1950's at Hampton Park and Elmvale Acres with Ansony Shoes. David Cohen married Queenie Levin and they had two children, daughter Judy and son Stanley. Stanley entered the shoe business in 1985 and continued until 2002. David Cohen is viewed as a pioneer in the Ottawa shoe business. He was one of the first retailers to introduce after sale plastic show bags, to display shoes in a window display, and to sell both men’s and ladies shoes in the same store.

History / Biographical
Renfrew Furs Lt. was first owned by Myer Schuchat and was located on Sparks street between Metcalfe and O'Connor st. In 1939, Myer Schuchat's cousin Irving Wexler was sent to Ottawa to run the Ottawa store after the unexpected death of the manager. Irving had been taught everything he knew about the fur business by his cousin Myer. A few years later Irving and his brother Sol who worked as an accountant in Montreal partnered worked together and purchased Renfrew Furs from their cousin. In 1948, their brother-in-law Dan Dunsiger moved to Ottawa to help with managing the company. The store soon moved to 156 Rideau Street where they built a temperature controlled and secure storage vault in the basement and a retail operation on the main floor with a manufacturing factory on the top floor of the two-storey building. A small office accessible by a staircase at the back provided a workplace for Sol to do the bookkeeping. Eventually a Mazzanine was added to house two offices, plus an accounts receivable counter and a desk for Renfrew Furs Storage; there was also a staircase leading upstairs to the factory and a new state-of-the-art secure storage vault which allowed them to have two storage vaults on the premises. Family members could often be found helping out around the store in their spare time. In 1961, Sol decided to return to Montreal leaving Irving and his wife Diane to buy out his share and jointly own the store. In the late 1970s Dan retired from the store and a few years later Irving and Diane were advised that the lease on the store would not be renewed as the building had been sold. This came as a shock to Irving as he had believed the landlord was aware of the money he had invested in the property and would offer him the opportunity to buy the building before he would sell to anyone else. In May 1982, Irving asked his son-in-law Sonny Segal, a seasoned businessman, to assist with the day-to-day operations of the company. Sonny had only been with the company for 4 weeks when Irving experienced a heart attack and ended up in hospital. While in hospital he experienced another massive heart and died. The very sudden death of Irving left Diane in shock and unable to set foot in the store. Diane left Sonny in charge of wrapping up the business and her son Michael in charge of finding a buyer. In spring 1983, Pat Flesher of Pat Flesher Furs purchased the company assets as well as the name Renfrew Furs and the Renfrew Furs Storage.

History / Biographical
The first official meeting of Adath Jeshrun was held on December 9, 1891 with the express purpose of establishing an orthodox congregation for the growing Jewish Community of Ottawa. Congregation Adath Jeshrun was founded in 1892 when its first president, John Dover, received the official charter. John Dover, Abraham Kranf, Morris Adler, and Michael Fine served as the first official executive committee. During the 1891 meeting it was agreed that the congregation was to be overseen by a committee of elected officials which would make up the executive committee. Executive offices included a President, Vice-President, Secretary, and three Trustees with office terms of one year. The structure of the governing body of Adath Jeshrun continued in this manner for the duration of the congregation's existence, with minor alterations, as it gained additional members. The 1914 congregation by-laws show an expansion of the governing committee. The committee grew to include a President, Vice-President, Parnass, Treasurer, and 9 trustees. The by-laws also established a number of active committees including the Education, House, Choir, Membership, Seat, and Cemetery committees. In 1929 Chevra Kadisha societies were established and additional rules of decorum were added. The by-laws subsequently recorded the religious officials who were to serve as part of the congregation. Religious officials included Rabbi, Chazan, Assistant Chazan, Shamas, and a Choir Master. Between 1890 and 1895, religious services were conducted at the homes of Moses Bilsky and John Dover, or at the homes of the leading members of the day. In 1893 a plot of land was bought on the East side of King Street for the congregation. The first Adath Jeshurun Synagogue was housed in a small building at 264 Murray Street from 1895-1904. The corner stone for the new synagogue was laid July 25, 1904 by A. Rosenthal. The congregation later moved into the King Edward Street shul, located at 375 King Edward Avenue. The Synagogue Building Committee was chaired by Archibald Freiman, then only 21 years of age. He presided over the Congregation from 1904 until 1930. Wolfe Abelson was the vice president throughout the early part of the congregation's history, serving continuously from 1905 to 1930. In 1910 the Hebrew Institute was added with the establishment of the Talmud Torah Board of Education. In 1917 it was decided that the King Edward Institute, owned by the congregation, was to be leased in order to facilitate the amalgamation of all Talmud Torah's in the area. During the first half of the twentieth century the congregation of Adath Jeshrun served as the principal orthodox congregation of the Ottawa Jewish Community. When the Diamond Jubilee was celebrated in 1952, two of the original congregation members, Jacob Freedman and Bernard Smith, were part of the festivities. Ottawa-born David Petegorsky, Executive Director of the American Jewish Congress, was the guest speaker at the anniversary banquet. In 1956, Adath Jeshurun Congregation, along with Agudath Achim Congregation, joined together to form the Beth Shalom Congregation on Chapel Street. At this time the synagogue building became the Jewish Memorial Chapel, also known as the Chevra Kadisha. The congregations first Cantor and Shochet was Reverend Jacob Mirsky who served from 1892 until 1942, followed by Reverend Joseph Rabin (1929-1956), and Reverend Harry Weissbord (1944-1956). Rabbi Simon Fyne served from 1912 to 1920, followed by Rabbi Max Mintz (1924-1926), Rabbi Dr. Julius Leikin (1927-1928), Rabbi Nathan Kollin (1929-1932) and United Synagogue Rabbis Abraham H. Freedman (1931-1636), William Margolis (1937-1938), Oscar Z. Fasman (1940-1946), Emanuel L. Lifschutz (1946-1951) and Simon L. Eckstein (1952-?). History / Biographical
Rabbi Roy Tannenbaum, formerly of Agudath Israel Congregation, initiated the idea for an egalitarian Conservative synagogue. Early supporters included Morris Schnitzer and Leah Schnitzer, Steve Sugar and Chris Sugar as well as Irwin Brodo and Fenja Brodo. By September, 1979, Adath Shalom was officially affiliated with the United Synagogue Of America (now called the United Synagogues of Conservative Judaism), and it was welcomed as a member of the Jewish Community Council of Ottawa. The first service was held on July 22, 1978, in the Greenbank Public School library and the first president Michael Berns was elected in August 1978. Prayer books were stored in Greenbank School lockers and the Sefer Torah was initially borrowed from Beth Shalom Synagogue. The ark and bimah were stored in the school’s storage area. Other space was rented for High Holidays. Founding principles included more equal participation of women in the service and by February 1982, women were welcomed to participate as part of the minyan. Only after a number of years and many different chazanim and rabbis did congregates take on the responsibility of leasing space for services for the High Holy Days. At the Annual General Meeting in 1990, the congregation approved a move to the Broadview Campus of the Jewish Community Centre and the first service was held at Hillel Academy chapel in 1993.

History / Biographical
Agudath Achim Congregation was created December 16, 1946. In 1947 the congregation obtained a building at 15 - 17 Harvey Street in the Town of Perth, Ontario. The Jewish Community used one half of the building as its synagogue and rented out the other half as a residence. In 1980, after the synagogue's closing, Bob Smolkin, a native of Perth, presented the Torah from Agudath Achim synagogue to Beit Rayim Synagogue in Richmond Hill, Ontario outside Toronto.

History / Biographical
In September of 1932, 16 families living in the newly developed west end of Ottawa met in Jacob Taller’s mattress factory for High Holy Day services. The group started meeting for daily and Shabbat services in the homes of Alex Kelman and Shnair Blushinsky. In 1936, the group decided to organize itself into a permanent congregation chartered under the name of Congregation Agudath Israel. With the expansion of the Jewish community into the west end of Ottawa, the congregation was growing rapidly and soon outgrew its small sanctuary. In 1948, a building at 30 Rosemount was purchased. Expansion was swift: the religious school had over 100 children; youth groups, including Brownies and Boy Scouts, were started; the Men’s Club held regular Sunday morning meetings; there was an active Sisterhood. Mixed seating was introduced in the early 1950s. In 1951, the synagogue became affiliated with the United Synagogue of America movement. As the congregation continued to grow, the synagogue purchased eight acres of land between Coldrey Avenue and Laperriere Avenue to construct a new building. By 1966, the complex was completed with the dedication of the new sanctuary. (Copied from the Kehillat Beth Israel Web site in 2018). History / Biographical
Prior to the creation of B'nai Jacob Congregation, the families of Uppertown, (or Centretown as it is now known), were served by the synagogues of Lowertown. The families of Uppertown walked to Lowertown synagogues for Holy Day services. In 1910 an idea arose to establish a congregation of their own, which would address the issue of families having to walk to Lowertown in bad weather. In 1911 the residents of Uppertown began to hold services in a public hall at 219 Bank Street and the home of Mr. J. R. Fogle at 384 Bank Street. J.R. Fogel was a tailor by trade and his business stationary was used to record the shul's history. For these services, the Congregation rented a Torah from another shul for $10 until they were able to raise enough money through donation to purchase their own. In 1914 they raised sufficient funds to purchase a house at 54 James Street which they converted into a shul. The purchase required a $4,000 mortgage and $1,000 in cash. The new Synagogue was named B'nai Jacob at the suggestion of Mr. A. Bookman and Mr. J. R. Fogle and a Talmud Torah was also organized and housed around 40 children. Rev. Morris Lappin was hired for his services as chazan and a mohel and Rev. Samuel Schreiber served as cantor and shoichet for 35 years until the shul closed. In 1931 the building was renovated and on November 19, 1944 the Congregation celebrated the burning of their mortgage. The building underwent a second renovation in 1951. By the late 1960's the congregation's membership had decreased to about 12 or 15 which made it increasingly difficult to form a minyan. In 1971 the decision was made to amalgamate into Congregation Beth Shalom. B'nai Jacob's Sifrei Torah and the James Street Synagogue's cornerstone became the property of Beth Shalom. B'nai Jacob Presidents included: H. Levine J.E Sayers J.R Fogel M. Lobel J.L Arron J. Bookman J. Gladstone A. Bookman A. Sherman
Custodial History
These records were transferred to the National Archives of Canada in 1973, and returned to the Ottawa Jewish Archives in 1996.
Notes
1. 1920-1939 Board minutes were recorded in Yiddish. 2. 1930-1943 Sisterhood minutes were recorded in Yiddish. 3. Abe Finestein recalled in a telephone conversation with L. D. that Aron Henry Levin lived on Gladstone and at one time stoked the fire at the James St. synagogue. He was the first president of B'nai Jacob.

History / Biographical
Beth Israel Congregation was an orthodox congregation, established around 1946, in Pembroke, Ontario. Founders included the families of Morrie and Harry Eisen, Jules Abramson, the Borensteins, the families of Phillip and Sam Cooper, the Landens, the families of Jerry and Herbie Noik, Mike Smaye, Mac Switzer, Abe Miller, Max Hager, Basil Harris, and Jack Zacharoff. Two years later Newton and Rhoda Prager joined, followed by Mandy Rosner, Joe Cooper, Edith Monson and Dr. Jerry Steinberg. Business was good in the Ottawa Valley in the post war era and congregants were able to buy a house for their synagogue at the corner of William and Alfred street by May 1957. A constitution for the Beth Israel Synagogue and Community Centre of Pembroke was drawn up in July 1957 with William Borenstein serving as its first President. Members traveled from Renfrew, Deep River and Fort Coulonge for services and simchas. The first rabbi to serve the small congregation was Harry Mandel from Montreal. He lived in the house in a second floor apartment which had a kitchen and two bedrooms that doubled as classrooms. Rabbi Chaim Weber joined the Pembroke shul from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, when there were 25 families associated with the synagogue in the mid 1960's. He remained for about 12 years, until health problems prevented him from continuing with services. Various people served the community until 1989 when Ian Kagedan, a graduate of Jewish Theological Seminary in New York started conducting High Holiday services for the Pembroke families. A Hadassah chapter was organized in Pembroke in 1948 with a membership of 8 women. The first executive was comprised of Mrs. A. Miller, President, Mrs. L. Bilsky, Secretary and Mrs. J. Zacharoff, Treasurer. Records show that membership increased to 18 by 1967 and remained there until at least 1972. Fundraising efforts included Chanukah and Purim parties, fashion shows, bake sales, teas and raffles. Beth Israel Congregation members contributed significantly to the United Jewish Appeal as well as State of Israel Bonds drives throughout the years. In 1981, the Beth Israel Religious School was a beneficiary agency of the Jewish Community Council and received $3,600 in funding. In November of 1987, the Ottawa Jewish Community Foundation established the Beth Israel Religious School of Pembroke Fund for Jewish Education with an initial investment of $11,545.00. Provision was made for distributing funds amongst Ottawa schools if the school ever closed. By the late 1990s, the synagogue building was in need of repair and had annual operational and maintenance costs of approximately $10,000.00. In 1998 after 40 years of active and sacred communal life the congregation held its final service. The Oren Ha’Kodesh was moved to Agudath Israel where it is used for auxiliary services.

History / Biographical
Beth Shalom congregation represents the 1956 amalgamation of two of Ottawa’s oldest orthodox congregations; Adath Jeshurun (first on Murray Street then King Edward Avenue) and Agudath Achim (Rideau Street). When B’nai Jacob congregation (James Street) amalgamated with Beth Shalom in 1971, Beth Shalom became the only congregation in downtown Ottawa. The Amalgamation Committee was composed of the officers of the Community Centre: Bernard M. Alexandor, Alex Betcherman, Morris Zagerman, Martin K. Levinson and Leon Petegorsky; Adath Jeshurun President Samuel Caplan, along with Hyman Gould, Samuel Lepofsky, Abraham Schaffer and Isidore Stone and Agudath Achim President Hy Soloway, along with Myer N. Drazin, Thomas Sachs, Samuel Swedlove and Solomon Zelikovitz. B’nai Jacob Congregation’s amalgamation were represented by their President - Reuben Kalin, Secretary - Jack Young, and Alex Sherman, J. I. Flesher and Ben Feinstein, when they conducted negotiations with Beth Shalom Congregation, represented by Hy Soloway, President and T. Metrick. The first officials were Rabbi Simon L. Eckstein - Cantor Emeritus, Joseph Rabin, Cantor Hyman Gertler, Ritual Director - Jacob Y. Cement, Secretary - Louis Slack and President - Bernard M. Alexandor. The congregation commenced with nearly 850 families, with about 150 being singles or widows. A new synagogue, designed by Hazelgrove and Lithwick, was inaugurated on Rosh Hashanah, 1956. In 2011 a decision was made to sell the building at 151 Chapel Street in downtown Ottawa as the Congregation could no longer afford its upkeep. In a 142-24 vote on November 6, 2011, shul members approved the sale and the land was to be purchased by the development company Claridge Homes, with the sale to be complete in March of 2012. On the last day before the final signing of the contracts however, Claridge walked away from the deal. Ian Sherman, president of Beth Shalom and broker of the deal said this of the situation, "“I respect their decision not to proceed. They lived by the terms of the agreement. I am not aware that there were any issues, but for business reasons, they chose not to proceed.” Another option for Beth Shalom was to amalgamate with Agudath Israel Synagogue, and after many talks and votes that too was turned down in early 2013. *NEEDS UPDATING*

History / Biographical
Beth Shalom West Congregation started as a satellite synagogue of Beth Shalom Congregation on Chapel Street to fill the need for an Orthodox synagogue in the Greenbank and Baseline area of western Ottawa. On May 3, 1980, the first West End service was led by Rabbi Basel Herring and attended by a small group of Jews in the cafeteria of Sir John A. MacDonald High School. Other functions were held in private homes or nearby public locations. As the group grew in size so did the dream of a permanent facility and on June 1982 the first plans for a building were unveiled. Along with these plans came a price tag of $674,000 and a fund raising campaign. Although the members and community were receptive, it quickly became apparent that west end community could not raise adequate funding for this structure. By November 1983, a Project Management Committee was formed with the goal of devising a building which could house the needs of the congregation and fall within financial boundaries. After considering a number of options and estimates provided by architect Joe Liff, the design of the present structure was created. A central Craig Henry site was chosen for a new synagogue on Chartwell Avenue and the property was donated by developers Jack and Irving Aaron. Over 400 people attended the ceremonial ground breaking ceremony. The dedication and official opening followed in September 1986. On June 3, 2008, the congregation gained independence and officially became Congregation Beit Tikva of Ottawa. The present sanctuary reflects the Orthodox nature of the congregation, including a women’s section defied by a raised floor and wooden Mechitzah. The memory of the Lowertown synagogues is reflected not only in the position of the central Bimah but in the inclusion of the Adath Jeshurun/ Ottawa Chrvra Kadisha’s original Aron Kodesh (Torah Arc) which was installed in February 1999. Rabbi Dr. Basil Herring served as the congregation’s first religious official; Rabbi Michael Orelowitz served from August 1982 to June 1983; Rabbi Sonnenschein joined the congregation in summer of 1983 and became the first full time rabbi in 1989. Rabbi Howard Finkelstein became the congregation’s rabbi August 8th, 1991 to remains in this position to the present day. Chazan Yair Subar is the Musical leader of Beit Tikvah of Ottawa and has been serving the congregation since June 2008.

History / Biographical
Machzikei Hadas Congregation began as a small group of people who worshipped in a home on St. Patrick Street owned by Mr. and Mrs. Goldberg. They met every Shabbat, winter and summer, paying 25 cents per week for dues. Then one High Holiday, they rented a hall at the corner of Dalhousie and St. Patrick Street for one month covering Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, and charged $1.00. In 1908, approximately 15 to 20 families bought the building at 264 Murray Street, the former site of Adath Jeshurun Congregation and repurposed soda water factory of Michael Fine, and returned it to its original religious function. 264 Murray Street became the first permanent Machzikei Hadas synagogue. Laibel and Max Steinberg and Kseil and Abraham Applebaum worked on 264 Murray to transform it into a synagogue again. An $1800.00 mortgage, taken out on May 12, 1908, uses the formal name of the congregation. Signatures include Henry Levine - tailor, Nathan Wolfe - tailor, Benjamin Nathan (son) - peddler, Max Friedman - shoemaker, Max (Mendel) Lachowitz - peddler and Abraham Applebaum - carpenter. The Congregation was incorporated on July 15, 1919 as Machezike Hadath Congregation (a spelling which was later modified). In 1923, the congregation purchased two homes owned by Oscar Petigorsky at the corner of King Edward and Murray Streets. The synagogue at 259 Murray Street opened in 1929. It was during Abraham Doren's presidency from 1935-1938 that the decorative murals were installed along the women's gallery. Reverend Baker served as cantor from 1910 until his death in 1945. He was followed by Reverend Nathan Borenstein and Reverend Harry Weissbord. Rabbi Reuven P. Bulka arrived in 1967 and continued in that post into the 21st century. Machzikei Hadas relocated in 1973 to a newly designed synagogue on Virginia Drive in Alta Vista. In its new location it extends services to 500 families including youth, seniors, educational and public awareness programs. On December 27, 1973, by Letters Patent, the name was changed to Congregation Machzikei Hadas. In 1994 Machzikei Hadas congregation became the first synagogue in the history of the Commonwealth to be granted a coat of arms. History / Biographical
The congregation of Young Israel began in 1967 as an orthodox minyan which met in the basement of the home of Rose and Moe Litwack on Kirkwood Avenue in Ottawa. When the Litwack home could no longer accommodate the number of worshipers, the congregation moved to a rented space on Merivale Road, and on March 31, 1968, the congregation dedicated its Sefer Torah received by generous donation of Gilbert Greenberg. Early in 1968, the congregation purchased a property and single story building with a basement at 627 Kirkwood Avenue. A sod turning ceremony was held in either June or August 1968, however, it is not clear if any modifications to the site were made following the ceremony. Rabbi Howard G. Messinger was the first spiritual leader serving for 2 years before the small congregation ceased to be able to support a full-time rabbi. Volunteer and part-time rabbis who were also teachers at Hillel Academy carried out leadership roles for a period of 8 successive years. They included Rabbi Millen, principal of Hillel Academy; Rabbi Pritzker, teacher; Rabbi Wolkenstein; and Rabbi Ben Natan. Rabbi Mordecai Y. Berger arrived in 1976. In the summer of 1980, a second story addition was constructed and the addition to the synagogue was dedicated August 17, 1980. As of 2016 Rabbi Galandauer serves the congregation.
