History / Biographical
The Ottawa Hebrew Senior Association was formed shortly after World War II to act as a social and recreational facility for the Jewish youth of Ottawa; to provide cultural and educational facilities and “to further independently the ideals of Judaism in general and the Ottawa Jewish Community in particular”. Founders included Harry Kershman, Ernest Wasserman, Beatrice Applebaum and Vera Landman. Harry Kershman was elected Chairman and Sylvia Budovsky elected Co-chairman. By 1948 most members were married and there were not enough single people to continue the organization. The Association met at Talmud Torah, George Street. Also in the vestry of Adath Jeshurun Synagogue, and $4.00 for an evening’s rental. Members danced to records. Rented a PA (public address) System and different people played their records. The Association considered a merger with the Young People's League in 1947 for the purpose of forming a single large, strong Jewish Youth organization in Ottawa. However, it was determined that the two groups appealed to two different types of members and would not benefit from a merger.
Notes
1. Zenith newsletter, 1947 and 1948 dance flyer transferred from Jewish Community Council of Ottawa fonds. 2. Other material donated by Mrs Sylvia (Harry) Kershman, August 16, 1999, March 4, 2002, Spring 2014. 3. Notes taken from Sylvia Kershman, August 16, 1999: The Ottawa Hebrew Senior Assoication was a group for fun. Another group was the YPL: Young Peoples League, more of a cultural organization. The OHS Association was the victim of its own success, as most members got married, especially men from World War II. It was really a continuation of wartime dances and parties. The Association met at Talmud Torah, George Street. Also in the vestry of Adath Jeshurun Synagogue, and $4.00 for an evening’s rental. Members danced to records. Rented a PA (public address) System and different people played their records. Sylvia Kershman found it “a rich, Jewish social experience”. They also put on a Purim Ball and a Matzo Ball. Harry Kershman elected Chairman and Sylvia Budovsky co-chairman.
