History / Biographical
Robert (Bob) Edelstein (b.1896- d.1969) arrived in North America around 1910 or 1911. He travelled with Bobby Brisco, later Lord Mayor of Dublin, to raise money for the Irish Brotherhood. Robert remained in the United States finding work in New York City. In 1917 he joined the American army and received a Lieutenant’s Commission at Kellyfield, Texas. After World War I he joined his parents, Jane (Jeanette, b. 1862- d.1943) and Abraham Morris Edelstein (a picture framer by profession, b. unknown- d.1936) who had immigrated to Ottawa in 1912 with Roberts siblings, Harry, Hyman (b. 1889, Dublin- d. 1957, Ottawa), Ernest, Becky, Rae and Annie. Eldest son Joe Edelstein remained in Ireland. Harry Edelstein became a promoter, selling Canadian mining stocks; Hyman Edelstein was an author and poet (see Hyman Edelstein fonds); Ernest (Ernie) Edelstein worked at Premier Hat Shops and was an accomplished musician; Becky (Edelstein) Gluck married Sam Gluck and was famous in Ottawa for her parties; Rae Edelstein married an American man who was a highly decorated marine in World War I and lived in Philadelphia; Annie Edelstein married a man from Kentucky. In Ottawa, Robert married Blanche Millar (b. 1896- d. 1990) of Brooklyn, on November 21, 1926. He was an active member of A.Z.A., the youth branch of B’nai B’rith, and remained involved with the organization for many years. Robert owned the Bob Morris Cap Factory, which he sold in the 1940s to S. E. Woods (Shirley). He maintained a business as a manufacturer’s agent, representing both his former company and the Grand Mere Knitting Company. Robert and Blanche Edelstein had one son, Bill. Blanche Millar Edelstein was an active, independent woman. She died in her 90's but maintained she was always 39. During World War I Blanche worked for the Department of National Defense. Before Blanche and Robert married they had to meet with Mrs. Lillian Frieman; all were members of the Adath Jeshurun Congregation and this may have been Congregation etiquette. Blanche was a member of the Pauline Bilsky Chapter of the Ottawa Hadassah-Wizo as well as the Adath Jeshurun Sisterhood. Blanche Millar’s parent’s, Leah and Rudolph Millar (a tailor by profession), moved to Ottawa fro, Brooklyn, New York sometime prior to 1926 with their children Henry, Bill, Blanche, Leah, Sarah and Abe. They moved from Brooklyn because of the family’s great love of hunting, fishing and the outdoors. Henry Millar became a professional wrestler and travelled all over North and South America before returning to Toronto and set up a business; Bill Millar became a civil servant. Bill Millar had a son who was a jockey, working race tracks around the United States.
