- History / Biographical
- Harold Shaffer (b. 1910 - d. 1979), son of Abraham and Mary (Baslaw), was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1910 and moved to Ottawa in his early childhood. He attended Lisgar Collegiate High School and received his B. Com from McGill University in Montreal. Harold worked a year as an accountant and then traveled for a year and a half abroad. He spent eleven months in Palestine in the mid 1930's and returned to Ottawa an ardent Zionist. He became associated with the Labor Zionist movement and formed the Israeli Forum. During this time he established a business on Bank Street and was also employed at Shaffers Ltd, his family's clothing business on Rideau Street. In 1955, Harold left Ottawa to teach retailing at Ryerson Institute of Technology in Toronto. In 1963, he was appointed Director of Sir George Williams School of Retailing in Montreal and was also associated with the University as assistant professor in the marketing department. During his academia career, Harold wrote many articles, published several books, spoke extensively and acted as a consultant in his field of retailing. Harold retired in 1975 and moved back to Ottawa. Upon his return he became involved in the Jewish Philosophical and Ethical Study Group, the Survey of the Jewish Aged in Ottawa, and the Ottawa Jewish Historical Society. Harold Shaffer married Frances Saunders (b. August 6, 1910, London, England - d. July 10, 2014, Ottawa). Harold and Frances had four children; Stanley (m. Sussana Uchatius), Rhea (m. Ted Wohl, d. 1981), Dorothy, and Jayeson (m. Dailaan Lovell). He died on June 5, 1979.
