History / Biographical
Ottawa Lodge 885 was officially founded in February 1921 with 25 members. It was the third Lodge formed in Canada after the rejuvenation of B'nai B'rith in Eastern Canada. The first presidents were Dr. Harry Dover, J. J. Marks and Benjamin Goldfield. It was also the first Lodge to sponsor a ladies’ auxiliary in Canada in about 1925. A local chapter of AZA was formed in 1932. The Ottawa Lodge also supported a Jewish Boy Scouts camp which was first located at Fitzroy Harbour, Ontario. It evolved into the first Ottawa B’nai B’rith summer camp for Jewish youth. Children who could not afford the camp fees were sponsored by the Lodge. In 1938 it was located at Dunrobin, Ontario and moved to Quyon, Quebec after WWII. The scout camp was sponsored by the Ottawa Lodge of B'nai B'rith but was run under the strict supervision of the District Boy Scouts Association. By the mid 1920's the Lodge established a Free Loan Association and was contributing annually to the support of an orphanage in Turkey. In the 1940's Ottawa Lodge put their full support behind the war effort. During World War II, every eligible AZA member went on active duty. This accomplishment was noted in the government folder “Canadians All”. After the war it set up a citizenship committee to help veterans reintegrate themselves into society. The Ottawa Lodge was also active in fundraising and charity. It offered scholarships at Carleton and Ottawa Universities. It also provided buses for outings for seniors and disadvantaged children. The Lodge gave tributes and awards to individuals who had played a significant role in shaping Canadian society. Past recipients include James Durrell, Allan E. Gotlieb and Gordon Henderson. Parliament Lodge 2159 was founded in November 1957, mainly by former AZA members (see 4-730). Confederation Lodge 2429 was organized in 1963. Its membership was comprised mainly of civil and public servants. It merged with Ottawa Lodge in 1968. Bytown Lodge 3061was formed in May 1977.

History / Biographical
Lillian (Bilsky) Freiman (b. June 6, 1885, Mattawa, Ontario – d. November 2, 1940, Ottawa) was the fifth of eleven children born to Pauline (Reich) and Moses Bilsky, a local merchant and community leader. At the age of eighteen, Lillian attended her first Zionist Convention in Montreal in 1903 and began what would be a life-long commitment to Zionism, philanthropy, and community involvement. Lillian Bilsky married Archibald J. Freiman on August 18, 1903 in Ottawa. Archibald Jacob (Aharon Yaacov) Frieman (b. June 6, 1880, Wirballen, Lithuania - d. June 4, 1944, Ottawa) came to Canada with his parents Harris (Hersh) and Hanna Freiman in 1893. Archie or A.J. as he was colloquially known, attended public school and Business College in Hamilton, Ontario. At the age of 19, he joined his father’s business, the Canadian House Furnishing Company of Kingston, Ontario and in 1902 they moved the business to Ottawa. In 1910, A. J. Freiman & Co. was still a modest business but under his guidance it grew into one of the largest department stores in Canada. Lillian and Archie had three children: Dorothy (b. 1906 - d. 1986), Lawrence (b. 1909 - d. 1986), and Queen Esther (b. 1912 - d. 1997) and adopted a fourth child, Gladys Rozovsky, in 1921. In 1913 Lillian and Archie moved to 149 Somerset Set, which became the meeting place for many of Lillian's charitable groups. Both Lillian and A.J Freiman led remarkable lives as community and Zionist leaders. During the First World War, Lillian Freiman hosted a Red Cross Sewing Circle in her home which became the Disraeli Chapter of the Daughters of Empire. Lillian worked tirelessly throughout the war providing relief and established the Great War Veterans Association that later became the Royal Canadian Legion. In 1917, Lillian was asked by the Mayor of Ottawa to organize local relief efforts to confront the influenza epidemic which resulted in her organization of a centralized information book and continual release of progress reports to keep the public informed. In 1919, Mrs. Freiman, then President and founder of Canadian Hadassah, toured Canada on behalf of Hadassah and organized chapters in every province. Lillian Freiman remained the head of Canadian Hadassah-Wizo from 1919 until her death in 1940. One of Mrs. Freiman’s many outstanding accomplishments was the organization of the Jewish War Veterans’ Committee in 1920. Subsequently, in 1921 she went to Europe and brought over between 146 and 151 Jewish war orphans from the Ukraine. Lillian Freiman's charitable and philanthropic work continued after the war, and it is widely accepted that the first Canadian poppies were produced in her living room at 146 Somerset Street. Lillian's involvement with the National Poppy Advisory Committee and as the Chair of Ottawa's annual Poppy campaign earned her the nickname "The Poppy Lady." In Ottawa she was for many years President of the Ottawa Ladies’ Hebrew Benevolent Association and active in the Perley Home, the Girl Guides Association and in many other societies, both Jewish and non-sectarian. She also chaired the United Palestinian Appeal in 1934. In recognition of her work, Lillian was dubbed "the Mother of Jewish People in Canada" by the publication Women of Candia. For her welfare work for war veterans she received the rare distinction of a life membership in the Royal Canadian Legion, making her the first woman to be awarded life membership. In 1934 she was awarded the Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) for “leadership in Jewish charitable organizations” and became the first Jewish-Canadian to receive the distinction. Like his wife Lillian, A.J. began his remarkable career as a Zionist leader during his teenage years. Commencing in the Ottawa Zionist organization, he rose to occupy a position on the World Zionist Organization’s Actions Committee. In 1919 he was elected as the Dominion Executive President of the Million Dollar Relief Campaign responsible for the organization of aid for Jews in Eastern Europe. In 1920, he was elected President of the Zionist Organization of Canada. Between 1905 and 1930, A.J. Freiman was president of the Adath Jeshurun Congregation. In 1934 he became the first President of the Ottawa Vaad Ha’Ir and continued in that capacity until his death in 1944. Lawrence Freiman, son of Lillian and A.J., assumed the presidency of A. J. Freiman Ltd. in 1931, and like his parents lead a very active life within Jewish Community Organizations, serving as President of the Zionist Organization of Canada from 1958 - 1962.

Notes
This 77 page photograph album was a gift to Mrs. Freiman's son, Lawrence Freiman, on the occasion of his Bar Mitzvah by Mr. Harry Hershman. In 1920 a campaign was launched in Montreal to bring immigrant orphans from the Ukraine to Canada. These were children who had lost their parents in the bloody pogroms of 1919. Ottawa's Lillian Freiman took charge of this project. She convened a conference of the city's Jewish community leaders where it was decided to bring over as many orphans as possible, she then traveled to cities across Canada to make an appeal on the orphans behalf. During this time she also worked to plan the campaign with Montreal's Harry Hershman, a representative of the People's Relief Committee and a prominent member of the Jewish War Orphans' Committee of Canada. Together, with the support of the committees, they succeeded in settling 146 Ukrainian war orphans in Canadian homes in 1921. That this was done through the offices of a few dedicated Jews, and by agency of an ethnic constituency held at arm’s length from the Canadian community at large, presents a revealing dimension of Canada’s immigration and social history — a dimension that has yet to be acknowledged outside ethnic circles.

1. Also numbered 1-184. 2. Lillian Freiman organized the Jewish War Veterans' Committee and went to Europe and brought over war orphans to Canada for adoption. 3. There were more than 137,000 Jewish children in the Ukraine who were orphaned during WWI. News of their living conditions and suffereing was brought to North American Jewry's attention by visiting professor Elie Heifetz who gave a tragic description. 4. Nellie Pierce (married to Asher Pierce of Montreal) was the cousin of Lillian. Nellie was also a member of the Executive Committee tasked with bringing the orphans over. She too applied to adopt a child. 5. The two women traveled at their own expense.

Notes
1. L-R: Lillian Freiman, William Shapiro?, William's brother?, Unknown (Possibly an adoptive mother), Nellie Pierce (of Montreal). 2. Nellie went on the ship to Belgium with Lillian and was also very involved with the drive to bring the children over. The elder boy is most likely William Shapiro (as opposed to the younger one), who sent the photo to Lillian at the end of her life with a beautiful and moving letter that stated that the photo was one of his “greatest treasures” and he was sending it to Lillian as “a remembrance of that day.” She got the letter in late August/early September and she passed away a short while later on November 2. 3. The woman holding the younger boy is most likely their new adoptive mother, though it's not entirely certain. The accompanying letter implies that the young boy is William’s brother. 4. He wrote the letter in 1940 and if he was 11 or 12 as he looks in the photo, he would have been about 30 or 31 at that time. 5. The letter and the photograph and the envelope is contained in BOX 1 of the Archibald and Lillian Freiman Family fonds.
