- History / Biographical
- Founded by Boruch (Benjamin) Applebaum prior to 1930, B. Appelbaum & Son was a tinsmith and sheet metal business located at 306 Murray Street, Ottawa. The business specialized in making garbage cans with corrugated sides, stove pipes, and furnace metals. The business was family run, at times employing Boruch’s brother Pinhey (Pinchus) Applebaum as well as Boruch’s daughters who worked in the office, including daughter Ann who is remembered as having good business sense. The Applebaums lived in an apartment above the business which was a very noisy arrangement. Boruch’s son Harold Applebaum eventually became a partner and inherited the business. Harold Applebaum married Goldie Reva Bodovsky. Overtime the business declined due to new technologies in metal work and manufacturing. Boruch Applebaum’s parents were immigrants to Ottawa. Moses Applebaum was a junk dealer, carpenter and shamus at Machzikei Hadas Synagogue, 259 Murray Street. He and his wife Edith (Baker) Applebaum had five children: Jacob Gershon Applebaum, Boruch Applebaum, Rachel Baker, Pinchus Applebaum and Motel Applebaum. Jacob Gershon Applebaum married Rebecca Rubenstein on September 3, 1911. They had five children: Harold (Harry), Norman Michael (Applebaum) Appleton, Sydney Herbert (Applebaum) Appleton, Eva Ruth (Applebaum) Wexler (b. Ottawa 1912), and Beatrice Joyce (Applebaum) Rodman. Pinchus Applebaum married Fay Azaroff in 1926 or 1927. They had three daughters: Dorothy (Applebaum) Hymes, Ethel (Applebaum) Eptstein, and Mildred. Fay Azaroff was a Ukrainian orphan rescued by Lillian Freiman’s group. After the war, some of the Applebaum family members changed their names to Appleton when they relocated elsewhere.

- History / Biographical
- Arie (Harry) Hendricks van Mansum was born at Utrecht, Holland, on March 5, 1920 to Gerrit and Neeltje van Mansum. As a travelling salesman, Arie had a rail pass which allowed him to travel freely after the German occupation of the Netherlands. Arie began helping Jewish refugees in the Netherlands in 1938 and in 1940 at the age of 20, he became involved in the Dutch Resistance Movement. He distributed the Dutch underground newspaper "Free Netherlands," found safe homes to hide Jews, and established an underground transportation network to move Jewish refugees. He was also involved in the distribution of food stamps and false identification cards for the Jews in hiding. In 1952 he married Doris van Diggele and the couple emigrated to Ottawa in 1958 where he started an insurance company. The couple had three children, Ria, Gerrit, and Margaret. Doris died in 1970 and Arie later remarried with Annette van Loenen. Van Mansum went on to receive awards from St. Lawrence University, Yad Vashem, and the Government of Israel. In 1969, Yad Vashem recognized Arie van Mansum as Righteous Among the Nations. He was also the subject of a biography, "A Friend Among Enemies" by Janet Keith, in 1991. He died in Ottawa in 1999.
- Notes
- 1. Donations came through Arie van Mansum’s will, dated February 28, 1998, and Ralph P. Euverman, his son-in-law. 2. Biographical information from the Ottawa Jewish Bulletin & Review, October 25, 1991. 3. "A Friend Among Enemies" donated on Shoah evening, April, 2003 by Ralph P. Euverman. 4. Preliminary online translations for the large photo reproductions of the Dutch document indicate a "Charter offered to Arie van Mansum for persons listed here...", "...thanks for...", "...during the occupancy years."
