History Biographical
Morton Taller was born in Ellenville, New York in 1919. He was the son of Jacob and Ethyl Taller (Tallifsky). Before his parents moved to New York in 1916, they farmed at Billings Bridge and delivered milk to Ottawa homes. After farming in the United States, and after Morton's birth, the Tallers returned to Ottawa in 1921 where Jacob Taller established a mattress manufacturing business. The ten children in the Taller family included Moses, Edith, Elizabeth, Samuel, Fay, Ann, Eva, Norman, Morton and Archie. Jacob Taller was a founding member of the Agudath Israel congregation formed in 1932. Services were held in his mattress manufacturing location for a short time. Morton Taller attended Devonshire Public School and completed the 3rd form at Glebe Collegiate Institute. At seventeen he started working for the government for $35.00 a month. He volunteered for the Royal Canadian Air Force in World War II, and went overseas in December, 1941 on the S.S. Cuba, arriving in Liverpool, England. He was part of the ground crew of the 408 Goose Squadron where he drove a truck and supplied gas to both the Halifax and Lancaster Bombers at various English airfields. After being repatriated to Canada in December, 1944 he was discharged in February, 1945. Morton entered the meat business when he returned to Ottawa. First he operated the West End Meat Market located at 989 Wellington Street. Around five years later, along with his brother Archie Taller and brother-in-law Morris Saslove, he operated Albert’s Meat Market at 71 William Street. It was a successful business, selling a carload of beef from Lethbridge, Alberta each week. They sold mainly retail and employed up to 30 butchers at one time. The business was sold in 1975. Mr. Taller was active in the Jewish community. His activities included being chairman of the Jewish National Fund, State of Israel bonds and United Jewish Appeal. In 1995 he became Post Commander for the Ottawa Post of the Jewish War Veterans. He married Sally Landau of Cornwall in 1951. They had three daughters: Connie Steinberg, Beverley Zaifman and Lynda Wakter and one deceased son, Jay Byrne Taller. Mr Taller passed away June 29, 2010 at the age of 90.
