History Biographical
Hadassah-Wizo Organization of Canada is an organization of Canadian women dedicated to the material and moral support of health and social welfare and educational programs in Israel and to the enrichment of Jewish life in Canada. Early 1990's membership consisted of 17,000 women and 1800 male "Life Associates", located in 43 Canadian cities and communities from coast to coast. Hadassah-Wizo Organization of Canada offers seminars on leadership, education, fund raising and public affairs. Mrs. A. J. (Lillian) Freiman of Ottawa, was the first president of Canadian Hadassah, which was first organized as a local chapter in Toronto in 1916.The program was greatly expanded in 1917, and became a National Organization in 1919. Lillian Freiman remained as National President until her death in 1940. An extensive Education Department provides a wide variety of programs on the many aspects of Judaism and Zionism. Ottawa Hadassah first began in 1920 under the presidency of Lillian Freiman. It was formed directly from the membership of The Ladies Herzl Society which started in 1910. The chief activity of the members in the early years was the sewing of clothing for hospitalized Jewish children in Palestine. As of 1993, there were 16 Chapters, with 515 members in all compared with 10 chapters in 1956. Chapters are given names which depict the special area of interest of its members, and are either named after the creator of the Chapter, Biblical or Zionist heroines. Records indicate that throughout the years, membership has been fluid, with some Chapters being created and dissolved within a short time span, while certain other Chapters, such as the Sinai Chapter, have continued. A decade later, functioning Chapters were few in number. Through research conducted in 2010 from Hadassah Highlights the following list of Esther Award winners was compiled: [list is most recent to earliest] 2009: Sheela Morin [Negev] Spring 2003: Anna Bilsky [Amit] Linda Joy Lazear-Greenberg [Mollie Betcherman] Harriet Podolak [Negev] Jean Naemark [Sinai] September 2000: Judy Aranoff [Amit] Naomi Cracower [Henrietta Weiss] Rosalie Fox [Ina McCarthy] Marlene Burach [Massada] Shelly Rothman [Mollie Betcherman] Marilyn Binder [Negev] Fay Shulman [Sinai] September 1999: Sheila Beck [Amit] Debbie Goldstein [Amit] Zelma Palef [Bertha Slonemsky] Paula Silver [Henrietta Weiss] Lauren Donen [Ina McCarthy] Elaine Singer [Massada] Karen Fogel [Mollie Betcherman] Joy Ostrega [Mollie Betcherman] Flo Morgan [Negev] Ann Bernick [Sinai] May 1998: Karen Essie-Frie [Amit] [Bertha Slonemsky] Ilene Streng [Henrietta Weiss] [Massada] Kim West [Mollie Betcherman] Helen Miller [Negev] All Members [Sinai] Joan Schwarzfeld [Tikvah] April 1997: Gina Grant [Amit] Roslyn Bloom [Henrietta Weiss] TBA [Mollie Betcherman] Claire Feldman [Negev] Bess Cohen [Sinai] Bess Finkelstein [Sinai] Barbara Blevis [Tikvah] May 1996: Ginger Jacobson [Amit] Terry Schwarzfeld [Amit] Elsa Swedko [Henrietta Weiss] Roz Tabachnick [Negev] Jean Naemark [Sinai] Joan Schwarzfeld [Tikvah] October 1992: Robin Chernick [Amit] Ibolya Goldberg [Henrietta Weiss] Ann Bloom [Massada] Carole Weidman [Negev] Joy Ostrega [Mollie Betcherman] Lois Calof [Tikvah] Stella Beck [Sinai] Judy Ain [Mollie Sach] Esther Awards evenings were mentioned in "Hadassah Highlights" for June 1975, June 1971, and May 1967. History Biographical
Adele Druckman was born in Dorna Candrenilor near Vatra-Dornia, Romania, in 1894. At eighteen years old, she attended a school called Jaures-Zeugnis in the town of Chernovitz. In 1938, at 44, she was married to Isaac Kinsbrunner, a businessman in Chernovitz, which was under control of the Nazis. As Jews, they had to wear a yellow star and carry an identity card. After the Germans were defeated, the Soviets took over. Most of their family was gone, and they struggled to start again. Finally, in 1949 they decided to leave and emigrate to Paris. Adele packed her monogrammed linen, and hid her diamond engagement ring as well as an unmounted diamond. Isaac's cousin had moved to Canada in 1913, so they went to the Canadian Legation in Paris for permission to immigrate. They were required to leave by January 1950, and so booked passage on the Samaria to arrive in Halifax on February 9, 1950. They were met by Isaac's cousin, Sydney Brown, ne Kinsbrunner, and his wife Jessie Cohen, who took them to Sydney's shop in Montreal at 4464 Coloniale Avenue. Unfortunately, Isaac suffered a heart attack and died, having only been in Canada for 12 days, devastating Adele. Sydney and Jessie had two sons, aged 5 and 7, who helped Adele learn English using their schoolbooks, building on the French she had learned in Paris. Sydney learned of a job as a nurse's aid at the Mount Sinai Sanitorium in Ste Agathe, a village north of Montreal, which Adele took to immediately. She was well suited to comfort the patients and enjoyed the peace of the countryside. Adele was often included in Brown family events, including Passover and Rosh Hashana, and she even undertook a trip to Brooklyn, New York, to visit Sydney's sister, Pearl. She was required to provide an explanation for her lack of a passport, but was fortunate enough to have been able to bring her birth certificate from Romania. The Brown family often visisted Ste Agathe to visit, until Adele retired at 74, after 18 years at the Sanitorium. Upon retirement, Adele returned to Montreal, where Sydney helped her find a small apartment on Cote St Luc road next to a synagogue. Sydney's sons, meanwhile, had grown up and become both doctors. They both got married in the same week, and Ida offered her engagement ring to the elder son, while the younger son was offered the unmounted diamond. (Biographical note taken from file 00001.)

History Biographical
S.L.(Shmuel Leib) Nathanson, the maternal great grandfather of donor Merle Kastner, was born in 1863 in Piatra Neamt, in the Moldavia province of Romania. He came to Canada with his wife Basie and five children in June, 1901, stopping briefly in Sydney, Nova Scotia, where S.L. left his family and travelled to Montreal, to set up his grocery business. With the help of Percy Dow of Dow Breweries and Lionel Eker of Ekers Brewery, he obtained a liquor licence for the "American Grain Distillers", later changed to "Sampson Distillers, Inc.", which provided him with the most lucrative part of his business. After the rest of his family joined him in Montreal, in 1901 he quickly established himself as an important and contributing member of the Montreal Jewish community. The grocery business S.L. Nathanson & Son, located on St. Cuthbert Street at St. Lawrence Boulevard, was registered in Montreal in 1908. Subsequently the "Distillers Distributing Co." was registered on Nov. 6, 1914, signed by SL Nathanson, and his sons Maurice and Henry Nathanson. S.L's younger son Sydney officially joined S.L. Nathanson and Sons in 1919, shortly before the partnership was dissolved in 1920. Soon after, Sydney Nathanson went on to work for the Bronfmans at Seagram's in Windsor, Ontario. Henry Nathanson and his wife Minnie, the maternal grandparents of the donor, were active members in the Montreal Jewish community and were especially supportive of Zionist causes - Hadassah, Hebrew Free Loan, among others.
