History Biographical
Morrie (Morris) Konick was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia, February 15, 1922, son of Lazer and Belka Konick. His siblings include Louis Konick (Detroit), Tilly (Konick) Oberman (Los Angeles) and Eve (Konick) Pascoe (Toronto). Morrie received his education at Sydney Academy, Grade 11. In September 1939 he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force. Between 1939 and 1940 he trained in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia and then transferred to Rockcliffe Station in Ottawa. There he became friends with a number of Jewish Ottawa boys including: Cy Torontow, Lawrence (Laurie) Sugarman, Bill Zelikovitz and Abe Schwartz. Through this group Morrie was introduced to the Maccabean Athletic Association although Morrie said it was most "active prior to 1939" and that he was not really a member of the club. During World War II he flew in the Coastal Command out of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, first as a Photo Technician and later as a Navigator. The Air Force used Stranraer Flying Boats. After the war Morrie made the Royal Canadian Air Force his career. He did survey mapping in Canada and then went overseas and served with NATO at Metz, France. Back in Ottawa he served at Uplands, Rockliffe and then at R.C.A.F. Headquarters. He left the service with the rank of Squadron Leader. His specialty was photography. Morrie was an active member of Beth Shalom Congregation, the Ottawa Jewish Historical Society and was the inspiration for the original microfiche digitization of the Ottawa Jewish Bulletin. He passed away in Ottawa August 18, 2012 at the age of ninty. He was predeceased by his wife Rose of nearly 70 years.
