- Zalman Coplan came to Canada in 1929 with his son Sam Copland. Zalman's wife Golda Copland and their daughter Bessie Copland later joined Zalman and Sam. After he arrived in Ottawa, Zalman opened New York Cleaners at 409 Bank Street in the building that housed the old Rialto Theatre. Sam worked with his father until 1940. Zalman was a tailor by profession and his wife, Golda, was apparently an exceptional seamstress. It was said that she could walk into the Freiman's Department store on Rideau Street, go into the Oval Room, look at a dress or suit, and go home and make the duplicate of same without a pattern. Sam moved to Montreal during the Second World War and went to work at Fairchild Aircraft Factory for the duration of the war. In 1945 he moved back to Ottawa and resided at 210 Somerset East with his father and mother, as well as his wife, Helen (Schwartzberg) Copland and their daughter Judith. At that time he went to work at Associated Cleaners on Richmond Road near Churchill Avenue, where some of the staff would later become his long time employees. In 1949, Sam bought Esquire Cleaners from Norman Wolfe which was located at 118 O'Connor Street near Laurier Avenue West. When he opened on O'Connor Street, his brother-in-law, Hyman Schwartzburg, who had returned from fighting in the war, joined in the business as a partner. After a while, Sam bought out Hy who then went to work at the warehouse at Loeb's in a managerial position. Sam's wife, Helen, came into the business and worked alongside him until the business was closed in 1971. Sam and Helen had two children, Jeffry and Judith (Judy) (Lieff). As Sam's health began to deteriorate, Jeff was taken out of school to help run the family business and Judy helped out on a part-time basis. Jeff worked in the business until it closed and then moved to Mississauga where he continued to work in the dry cleaning industry. Sam sold the premises on O'Connor Street and then moved to 90 Richmond Road where he opened a larger plant in 1968.
