History / Biographical
Mary Goldberg was born January 28, 1911 at the Rideau Street Hospital in Ottawa. Her parents were Noah Barrett and Ethel (Cohen). In 1912 her parents divorced and her mother and step father, Banjamin Eskin, raised Mary. Mary attended Elgin Street Public School and then two years at Lisgar. After finishing at Lisgar, Mary went to Klock Business College. After Klock Business College, Mary worked in the office of Beach Foundry, a stove manufacturer, for 10 years. When Mary was 14, she started seeing George Goldberg, an Englishman who worked as a hair stylist. George ended up being the first haircutter at A. J. Freiman's hair salon after cutting Dorothy Freiman's hair and her being very happy with his work. When they met, hair was "just being bobbed." They met at a Social Club on Rideau Street opposite Freiman's. A concert was held every week during which Mary played the piano and George the violin. They married in 1929 and had two children, Ronald and Beverly (Gershkovitch). Eventually George started his own stylist shop on Sparks Street. In 1948 he moved his business to 172 Rideau Street. Mary would bake cookies and serve them to customers. Mary retired to Governor's Walk Retirement Home and was a faithful member of the Mitzvah Knitters at the Soloway Jewish Community Centre. She traveled to and from home via Para Transpo. Mary passed away January 2, 2009 at the age of 98.
Notes
1. Goldberg history taken from Mary Goldberg, November 19, 2008 and obituary. 2. From an earlier conversation with Mary Goldberg, she remembered going to her birth father to ask for money. She also recalled how hard her grandmother worked "She would work all Saturday night to be ready for Sunday". 3. Additional material collected for CHIN virtual exhibit 2011/2012. 4. Additional info can be found in the George Goldberg = Goldberg's Beauty Salon fonds.
