History / Biographical
Harry Cherm (b. August 15, 1892 in Lacowitz, Minsk, Russia, d. 1969 in Ottawa) and Tilly Viner (b. April 3, 1898 in Zhitomer, Ukraine, d.1975 in Ottawa) emigrated to Canada separately. Harry initially moved in with his brother who was residing in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, but soon relocated to Ottawa. Tilly and her sister Mulca emigrated to Ottawa, followed by her parents and two younger siblings. Harry and Tilly met in Ottawa and were married on March 29, 1914. Harry worked as a shoemaker in his store while Tilly worked in their grocery store. The businesses were located next to each other on 245 Rochester Street. It was in the grocery store that Tilly got the reputation of being a wonderful cook as she fed the majority of people who came by, including salesmen. Tilly was also known as being the first woman in Ottawa to drive a car. Both enjoyed travelling. They had four children, Mollie (Fine), Dora (Waserman), Sylvia (Kaiman) and Donald. Both were residents of Hillel Lodge on separate occasions.
Notes
1. Donated by Sol and Sylvia Kaiman, May 3, 1999. 2. Marriage Certificate was issued on March 16, 1962 in order for the Cherm’s to collect their old age pensions.
