- History / Biographical
- Don Snipper (b. 1915 - d. December 20, 2003) was born in Ottawa to Louise (Shapira) and Alfred Snipper. Don Snipper had four sisters, May, Mona, Dorothy (m. Dr. Harold Bernstein) and Ruth (Rubin). Alfred was born in Russia, moved to England, and then immigrated to Canada, settling in Ottawa. Alfred had an older brother Morris who may have been in Ottawa first. Alfred worked as an auctioneer and had an antique shop in the Lord Elgin Hotel. He was the official auctioneer for the Mackenzie King estate. Don attended Lisgar Collegiate from 1929 to 1934. He played on the basketball team, was part of the orchestra and joined the editorial staff of the yearbook Vox Lycei. Upon gradiation he attended St. Patrick’s College for a year before taking a position with the Federal Government. In 1940, Don enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force and received his wings in May 1941. He became a flying instructor and reconaissance pilot. He was posted overseas in April 1944. By the end of the Second World War he was flying long distance photo reconnaissance in Spitfires. Upon returning to Canada, he studied at Osgoode Hall and graduated top of his class. Despite his high standing, he was refused an articling position with a large legal firm in Toronto because he was Jewish. He completed his articling in ehat he described as a “second rate situation”. Because it was difficult for Jews to enter established law firms, he returned to Ottawa and started working ofor Hy Soloway. He joined the firm of Sam Berger hen Sam offered him $5 more per week. Don Snipper became a Senior Partner at Snipper, Cohen, and Murray. Don met Shirley Segall in Montreal where he was teaching at St. Hubert, at the time Shirley was visiting from California. They became engaged after a three week courtship and Shirely's family was not very pleased because Don's parents were poor and separated, and due to the fact he was in the Canadian Air Force. Nevertheless they were married and raised four children; Jon (m.Colleen), Chick, Nancy, and Heather.
