History / Biographical
Jacob Freedman (b. Zhitomir, Ukraine, April 15, 1864 - d. October 31, 1957, Ottawa) arrived in Ottawa in 1891. He had decided in 1881 to leave Russia and follow his brother, Ephraim M. Lerner, to the United Sates. Almost a decade later he decided to move on to Ottawa, Canada. Initially he sold butter, eggs, fruit and vegetables door to door in Sandy Hill and Lowertown. He opened his first store in 1894 at 34 1/2 Byward Market Square. Later on, he established the J. Freedman & Son Wholesale Grocery with son Michael which became the largest wholesale grocery in Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec. In 1912, Freedman became a very successful commodities trader at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. In 1951 he sold the Ottawa business in 1951 to the Zelicovitz Brothers (Nathan, Dave, Max and Saul) and turned to real estate founding the Freedman Realty Co. Ltd. Jacob Freedman married Leah Phillips, daughter of a pioneer Jewish family of Cornwall, Ontario in 1892. Their family included Michael (Anna Smith, Port Credit), Anne (Isadore Chodikoff), Jennie (Dr. M. Abraham Glickman). “Gifted with an analytical mind and great foresight”, Jacob Freedman established the first charitable foundation within the Ottawa Jewish community. The Jacob Freedman Charitable Foundation became effective June, 1958. 75% of the net income was paid to Jewish religious, charitable or educational organizations in Ottawa. His grandson Lawrence became a real estate developer, and his great-grandson, Jonathan Freedman, is in property management with a firm called Equity Realty Group, Inc. In his retirement years, Lawrence became president of the Ottawa Jewish Historical Society in April, 1992. He played a leading role in the advancement of the Historical Society and the founding of the Ottawa Jewish Archives. Lawrence passed away suddenly on August 5, 2006 and is buried beside his grandfather Jacob in the Ottawa Jewish Cemetery, Bank Street.
Notes
1. Information from the Ottawa Jewish Bulletin, April 17, 1959, and printed flyer for Jacob Freedman Centennial. 2. 1 kiddish cup, gold plated and a circular tray, gold plated presented to Jacob and Leah Freedman on their 50th wedding anniversary - 1892-1942, from their family. These two items are located with other artifacts. 3. Further accrual of two copies of, "Jacob Freedman Land Assembly, August 25, 1903 to September 26, 1929," located in the Oversize Certificate Box 1. Both copies donated by Lawrence Freedman. One copy came to the archives from Ruth Kahane Goldberg after Lawrence’s death.
