History Biographical
In September, 1932, aproximately 16 families headed by Mr. J. Taller united to form a minyan (quorum) for the High Holidays in the West End. In April, 1936, the group organized itself into a permanent Congregation which was chartered under the name Agudath Israel in 1938. The first president was Harry Leikin. Founders of Aguath Israel were Jacob Taller, Harry Leikin, Alexander Kelman, Morris Goldberg, S. Blushinsky, Norman Kalin, S. Tanner, M. Kilinovsky, Abraham Borts, Max Cooper, David Rubin, Israel Hartman, Jacob Ages, Morris Feldberg, S. Dieks and J. Gruvick. In March, 1938 at a cost of $3000, the St. Mathias Anglican Church at 17 Fairmont Avenue was purchased as a sanctuary. The Fairmount synagogue was officially opened by Rabbi Fasman in March, 1940. The next congregation move was to 30 Rosemount. In 1947, the Honourable Abraham H. Lieff became President of the Congregation. Early into his seventeen year tenure as President, the Congregation moved from an orthodox mentality to a conservative one. On March 11, 1951 the Congregation became affiliated with the United Synagogue of America. In 1954, eight acres of land bounded by Kirkwood, Coldrey and Laperriere was purchased, with construction of the new Synagogue beginning in 1958. The new Synagogue at 1400 Coldrey Ave. was opened in 1960. The new sanctuary was dedicated in 1966. Until 1949, community Rabbis in Ottawa were shared. Rabbi Fasman officiated at the opening of 17 Fairmount and Rabbi Kravetz conducted High Holidays in the early 1940s. In 1948, Rabbi Morris D. Margolis was engaged as the first spiritual leader of the Congregation, followed by Rabbis Samuel Burstein, 1951-1959, Michael Kurz, (1959-1961), J. Benjamin Friedberg, 1961- 1974, Roy Tanenbaum, 1974-1976, Irving Schreier, 1976-1982, Arnold Fine, 1982-____ (Rabbi Fine was appointed Rabbi Emeritus in 2004), Charles S. Popky (____-____), Barry Schlesinger (____-2013). Cantor Aptowitzer served the congregation from 1952 to 1994, followed by Samuel Linkovsky, and Stephen Chaiet. A gala celebration to mark the 50th anniversary of the congregation was held on April 11, 1989 at 1400 Coldrey. An exhibition of photographs and an anniversary booklet entitled “50th Anniversary” was produced. The first female president of the Synagogue was installed in 1989 and women were also invited to participate more fully in ritual aspects of the synagogue. Women's participation continued to grow since that time. Since 2006, women have been eligible for any aliyah and are also permitted to read Torah. Arrangement
1. Arranged by Estelle Gunner, volunteer and Agudath Israel member, 2007. She inquired about the missing minutes so this is a definitive position. 2. Receipts retained under the financial series, indicate activities for which there are no other records i.e. Boys Breakfast Club 1966/YSO 1968.
Notes
1. History taken from “Agudath Israel: 50th anniversary”, 1989. 2. Bulletins received on a regular basis. 3. Minutes between 1986 and 1993 were lost in a flood at Agudath Israel Congregation. 4. The Sisterhood dwindled by 1996 because the same women were always approached for projects and younger women began working outside the home. 5. Information for fonds level description was taken from finding aid written by Shirley Berman and Hagit Hadaya. 6. Further accrual of Sisterhood Newsletters donated by Roz Dreskin, January 2001. 7. Further accrual of 42nd Girl Guide Company photograph donated by Estelle Gunner, February 2000. 8. Malca Pass Library material donated by Estelle Gunner, February 28, 2005 and 2010. 9. Further accrual of sod turning invitation to the new synagogue, 1958 10.Women's participation history taken from Agudath Israel web site, September, 2008. 11. CD's donated via Marie Levine in December 2009. Cinderella Ball material donated via Marie Levine in January 2009. 12. Malca Pass Minutes 1965 - 1974, 1983 - 2000 (includes financial reports, correspondence etc.) donated by Jack Schecter Dec 2010

History Biographical
Temple Israel Congregation was the first reform congregation in Ottawa. The founders were Bill Danson and Billy Danson, Myrna and Ernie Potechin, Irwin and Elaine Singer, Sam and Jean Bond and Madelyn Alexandor. All were relatively new to Ottawa. They met in the spring of 1966 and by November of that year, the group had a paid-up membership of seventeen families. Tenets of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations are followed. In March, 1967 the name Temple Israel was chosen and the first consecration service was held on October 28, 1967. Services were first held at the Histadrut Centre, then at the Montefiore Club with occasional large services at the Chateau Laurier or El Mirador Hotel. In September, 1971, the congregation had its first permanent home in the former B’nai Jacob Synagogue, 54 James Street. The building was renovated and used until October, 1972 when it was badly damaged by fire. After that, arrangements were made for services in the Montefiore Club, the Jewish Community Centre, 151 Chapel Street and the Unitarian Congregation. In 1975, Temple Israel held their High Holiday services in a newly designed synagogue building on Prince of Wales Drive. Rabbi David Powell served the congregation from the summer of 1967 until June 1972, and was followed by Rabbi Donald Gerber in 1975 who was present for the dedication of the new synagogue. Rabbi Sandford T. Marcus served from 1980 - 1986, Rabbi Donald Tam 1987, Irwin Tannenbaum from 1987 to 1995. Rabbi Steven Garten was appointed in 1995.
Notes

Bulletins received on a regular basis (with gaps). 3. Some letters in the miscellaneous correspondence between brotherhood members and sisterhood members - 1968 - 1972 (Located in Box 3) file do not indicate they are from Temple Israel, but were clipped with other correspondences that were from the congregation.

History Biographical
The state of Israel bonds drive started in Ottawa in 1953 with Sam Berger and Mrs. Frances Greenblatt as co-chairs. Rabbi Simon L. Eckstein broadcast an impassioned plea for people to purchase "Bonds of Israel" over radio station CKOY in April of 1953 to mark Israel's 5th birthday. The State of Israel Bonds is an organization whose sole purpose is to sell bonds and notes for the Israeli Ministry of Finance. Israel Bonds are securities issued by the State of Israel to help build the nation's infrastructure. David Ben-Gurion established the Israel Bonds program in 1951, as a means of providing Israel with urgently needed economic support. Israel was economically devastated by the War of Independence; immigrants that poured into the country from Europe and Arab nations were living in primitive shelters; food was rationed, and an economic infrastructure was practically non-existent. Rebuffed by Wall Street, Prime Minister Ben-Gurion established the Israel Bonds organization as a means of raising economic capital through the sale of State of Israel securities. In 2009, the Hon. Rabbinic Chair is Rabbi Reuven Bulka. Co-Chairs Bonnie Merovitz and Dr. Steven Fremeth head the 2009 bond drive in Ottawa.
