History Biographical
Shirley was born in Toronto, 1930, daughter of Baruch (Benjamin) and Helena (Freedman) Hettler. Shirley and Shier Berman met in Toronto through their shared Zionist youth interests in Habonim. They married on May 24, 1951 in Toronto and shortly afterwards spent a year in New York to lead a Zionist youth movement called Habonim. They returned to Toronto in 1953 when Shier began his post-graduate work at University of Toronto. Shirley arrived in Ottawa in 1957.with her husband when Shier commenced work at the National Research Council. They had two children, David and Reeva. Shirley's adult education included courses at Carleton University and a special archival training course with the National Archives of Canada, 1983. She became the Executive Secretary of the Ottawa Jewish Historical Society in 1972 and held that position until 1998. Simultaneously, Shirley began collecting the history of the Ottawa Jewish Community and founded the Ottawa Jewish Archives. Shirley was always active in Zionist causes within the Ottawa Jewish community. She was a member of Pioneer Women and reactivated Habonim-Dror in Ottawa in 1961.
