Solomon Abel came to Canada from Russia via the United States, entering Canada in 1907. His six children (as of 1914) included daughter Annie, whose school documents are in this collection. Another daughter was the mother of Jack Silverstone, the donor. Mr Silverstone was the Executive Vice-President of Canadian Jewish Congress. These early immigration and school documents, all originals, are important for their display potential - one includes a photo and describes the subject's profession and Hebrew marriage.

History / Biographical
Ita Aber was born in Montreal, in 1932 and grew up in a family dedicated to Zionist and charitable causes. She later moved to New York, where she made her name as an artist. As described in a 2001 article; "Ita Aber is an artist who delights in unconventional formats that provide unique and startling insights into Jewish Life. Her work is found in almost every major Jewish museum throughout the world. She is a master of the fabric arts, which is by its very nature, an interdisciplinary field. As practiced by Ita Aber, the fabric arts explode in scale to include the diverse skills of embroidering, beadwork, sewing, appliqué, silkscreen, jewelry design, weaving, painting, sculpture, and assemblage. The stunning range of her talents is reflected in the vast array of work and Judaic objects she has produced, from wall hangings, jewelry, and sculpture to Torah covers, etrog boxes, and Purim masks." Ita Aber is also known as a conservator of textiles, an art historian, a curator, teacher, and the author of The Art of Judaic Needlework: Traditional and Contemporary designs (Scribner 1979).

Physical Description
1.6 metres of textual records.
Scope and Content
The series contains a copy of Abraham Joseph's diary from the 18th century. The original is housed at the National Archives of Canada. There are typewritten transcripts of the diary contents by Annette Wolff as well as a bound volume which she titled Bachelor's Hall or Maturing with Canada 1834-1876: Diary of Abraham Joseph of Quebec. Also included is a photocopy of the 1882-1883 diaries of Fanny David Joseph, one of Abraham Joseph's daughters, and original extracts from her 1886 diary on life at Kinkardine Place, Quebec City. Of particular note is The Blue Book, a handwritten newsletter written between 1839 and 1842. The Blue Book was usually written by male members of the Joseph family residing in Montreal. It was the precursor of another extremely long-lived Joseph family newsletter, The Moon. The Blue Book is filled with family and community gossip, with the people and places disguised by droll nicknames. Questions of religious observance and decorum surface frequently, reflecting the concerns of a family that moved in non-Jewish circles while striving to maintain their identity. Similar spoofs are in this series as well: an original issue of The Tattler, handwritten in 1839, and a photocopy of the Gazette of Fashion, November 1835. The series contains an original 1828 school certificate stating that Abraham Joseph was at the head of his class; photocopies of Abraham Joseph's Quebec Light Infantry certificate; property sale deeds from 1815 and 1864, including his Natashquaw property; press clips regarding his Quebec City mayoralty nomination in 1859 as well as copies of his obituary from various newspapers. The series also contains Annette Wolff's research papers on various members of the Joseph, Hart, Judah, David and Pinto families, including family trees, as well as her correspondence with the Public Archives of Canada and academic institutions regarding the publication of Bachelor's Hall.

History / Biographical
Abraham Joseph was born at Berthier, Quebec, on November 14, 1815, the son of Henry and Rachel (Solomon) Joseph. After the death of his father, he moved to Quebec City, where he resided until his death, on March 20, 1886. In March 1846 he was married to Sophia, daughter of Samuel and Sarah (Hart) David, and had four sons and seven daughters. Abraham Joseph was a successful businessman, and his name was identified with almost every commercial enterprise of his time, in most cases as a director. For a number of years, he was president of the Quebec Board of Trade and later became president of the newly formed Dominion Board of Trade. He was one of the original directors of the Banque Nationale and was a member of the board of that institution which convened for eleven years without change. Mr. Joseph resigned from the directorate of this bank, which office he held until the bank was wound up. He was a member of the Quebec City Council, and at the time was a candidate for the mayoralty, being defeated by a very few votes. For over thirty years he was vice-consul for Belgium. He took a lively interest but no prominent part in politics. During the Papineau Rebellion in 1837-1838, Mr. Joseph served with the Quebec Light Infantry, attaining the rank of major. Intensely proud of his English descent, Mr. Joseph was a life member of the St. George's Society and several times its president. Although in his day there was no organized Jewish community in Quebec, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph maintained a completely Jewish atmosphere in their home and were as highly regarded by their Roman Catholic and Protestant co-residents as by their Jewish neighbours. He was at all times regarded as the leader of his community. He was the founder of the wholesale grocery business, under the name of Joseph & Co. Mr. Joseph was a member of the Stadacona, Garrison, and Tandem Clubs, Quebec. Abraham Joseph's diaries are a valuable early record of Jewish life and material culture in Quebec.
Notes
General note: Abraham Joseph's diary, coupled with Annette Wolff's background papers, provides a wealth of information on the social, economic and religious life in 19th century Quebec. The material is of great value to historians, sociologists, authors, journalists, and teachers and students of Quebec life in the 1800s.

History / Biographical
The Adath Israel Congregation first met in a rented hall in 1930. In 1936, land was bought in Outremont; in 1938 the synagogue was incorporated; by 1940 the building was completed. The Adath Israel, an Orthodox synagogue, also ran the first congregational day school in Canada in the synagogue building; a school was built in 1947. A Hebrew high school, the Adath Israel Academy, was begun in 1952, also with its own building. It was later called Hebrew Academy, and both schools amalgamated with Young Israel Synagogue's schools in 1965. The Adath Israel has its own cemetery. It also ran an afternoon school and developed a separate Sephardi service (Adat Yisrael S'faradi). Eventually, due to the shifting Jewish population, the Outremont buildings were sold and the congregation moved to a newly built synagogue in Hampstead in 1980. The Adath Israel had one of the first "contemporary" synagogue designs and was the first large, new synagogue built in the post-Depression era in Montreal.

Series
Scope and Content
This series consists of 49 film canisters, a few containing multiple small reels, and several dozen additional small loose sound reels. The total duration of this material has not been estimated. The vast majority of this series consist of sound reels. Although a small proportion of these sound reels contain material of potential interest such as interviews with Moroccan Jews in Montreal, and speeches made at conferences, the specific speakers are for the most part unidentified, making them of limited research value. The remainder of the material in this series consists of sound materials gathered in the process of research, and sound elements used for the final mix of the film. Much of this sound material is comprised of sound loops of room tone and effects, background music, sound mixes, and extra copies of sound recordings. A number of sound reels appear to belong to unrelated Bensimon film projects. In addition to the original visual material shot for the film, the visual film stock in this collection includes archival footage of Morocco, and canisters labeled "stock shots." Although most of the material is in 16 mm format, a few of the film reels are 35 mm.

Scope and Content
This series consists of six boxes of negatives, of which 250 files (1 box) of negatives had been entered on computer as of 1999. Five additional boxes remained to be entered as of this date. Some of the negatives were donatedwithout any identifying information, and therefore cannot be described in detail. Others were numbered rather than identified. A ledger containing negative numbers supplements this part of the collection, and where possible this information was used in cataloguing. However, further details can be gleaned by researchers wishing to use this ledger more extensively. The series contains photos of the agencies under the "umbrella" of AJCS (Allied Jewish Community Services, now known as Federation CJA). A vast number of photos portray the Combined Jewish Appeal, a major function of AJCS. This is a yearly fundraising effort which included the Operation Exodus campaign (to help bring Russian Jews to Montreal). Images in these files include the soliciting of donations by telephone at long tables and missions to Israel. Another large subgroup contains photos of the Jewish Public Library, including the J.I. Segal Awards, annual meetings, the JPL's new home at 5151 Cote St. Catherine Road (1973), a children's program, First Fruits evening, a private reception with Saul Bellow (famous Canadian author), entrance to the library and the rare books collection. There are photos of the Berman Auditorium in the Cummings Building with its wall of framed photos of those who helped found the Jewish Public Library, award ceremonies, financial seminars including men wearing kippot, (skullcaps) and women fashionably dressed. The Jewish Education Council photos depict a professional teachers' day with signs in Hebrew and French, and one of their workshops. There are photos of Hillel House (a student organization) showing the library, an auction, its Russian conference at McGill University, a dance café, and its work on behalf of Soviet Jewry. Other photos depict various events of AJCS, such as fundraising dinners, private receptions, annual meetings, conferences, lectures, portraits of well-known community leaders, Women's Federation and Young Adult Divisions, and Super Sunday (opening of annual fundraising campaign). The proportion of this series that has been processed is described on a file level in the DataEase database, form PCAT, code PC 16
