- Abraham Kert arrived in Canada in 1885 from Lithuania. He landed in Montreal and worked as a farmer and fur trader in Lancaster, Ontario, and in various locations in Quebec including Lachute, Harrington Lake (near Thurso), and in Buckingham where there were five other Jewish families. Around 1900, he moved his family to Ottawa “for the social possibilities for his daughters." Abraham Kert married twice and had two families. In Ottawa, Abraham was involved in peddling and in selling jewelry. He was an active member of the Adath Jeshurun Congregation and for many years he maintained the Ottawa Jewish Cemetery on Bank Street.
- Notes
- Abraham Kert’s birth date is problematic. He was likely born sometime between 1847 and 1856. (The 1901 census indicated is age as 45 years, giving him a birth date of 1856. His headstone in the Ottawa Jewish Cemetery gives his age as 97, with a death year of 1944, indicating his birth year would be 1847.)

- History / Biographical
- David and Rachel (Cohen) Gottdank were married in London, England. David and Rachel, along with their eldest daughter, Sarah and infant Esther (b. November 22, 1904 - d. 1988) emigrated to Ottawa sometime between 1905 and 1910. Jeanne (d. August 20, 2003), Arthur and Syd were all born in Ottawa. David died prematurely, in his early forties, in 1922 of tuberculosis. The three daughters commenced music lessons at an early age, Sarah playing the piano, Esther the cello and Jeanne the violin. When the family moved to Toronto, Esther began her career as a cellist by playing with a quartet in the orchestra pit for silent movies at Allen’s Danforth Theatre in the mid 1920s. In 1925 Esther gained a place as a cellist with the Chicago vaudeville troupe “The Roumanian Serenaders” which later became known as “The Slaves of Melody.” Jeanne similarly gained a place in the group upon the insistence of their mother, Rachel, that Esther not tour alone. The sisters changed their surname to Gordon when travelling with the road show and performing in cities and towns across the United States under the stage name "The Gordon Sisters." from 1925 to 1928. Jeanne left after two years and Esther continued on for another three years. The three sisters, Esther, Jeanne, and Sarah, continued their musical careers in Ottawa by participating in Ottawa Music Festivals, the Ottawa Philharmonic Orchestra and the Jewish Community Centre orchestra. Esther was a life member of Local 180, Ottawa-Hull District Federation of Musicians. Esther returned to Ottawa and worked briefly with the Arthur Murray Dance Studio in 1928 before commencing a job with the Income Tax Department of the Government of Canada. Esther married David Mirsky (d. 1983), nephew of Rev. Jacob Mirsky, in New York on January 19th, 1932. The couple's marriage was kept a secret so that Esther would not lose her job with the Government of Canada. David worked as a shoe salesman at A.J Freiman's Department Store before opening the Rideau Street Smoke Shop. In the 1940s, David opened D & H Cigar store with Harry Torontow which remained in business until the 1960s. Esther and David had a daughter, Deborah (b. November 1934), who married Dr. Herbert H. Cosman. At the age of 13, Jeanne played violin with the Ottawa Philharmonic Orchestra which is now the Ottawa Symphony. Jeanne Gottdank married Louis Lieff. They had four children: Hannah (Meyers), Mia (Bernard), Beryl (Frankel), and Bernard Lieff. Sarah married Harry Torontow. They had two children: David and Ray.
- Notes
- 1. Material donated by Deborah Mirsky Cosman, January, 2000. 2. Clippings in scrapbook are not attached to the pages 3. Sarah's children: David Torontow, Ray Toronto. Esther's children: Debbie Cosman. Jeanne's children: Hannah Myers, Mia Bernard, Beryl Frankel, Bernard Lieff. Information supplied by Joseph Lieff. 4.Joseph Lieff relates that Jeanne played violin with the Ottawa Philharmonic (age 13) which is now the Ottawa Symphony. In the early 1930s she and he sisters Sarah and Esther travelled with a large orchestra which was featured on the B. F. Keith circuit.
