History / Biographical
Abraham Lithwick (b. 1897 Ritziv, Russia - d. 1953 Ottawa) and Dora (Rosenberg) Lithwick (b. 1897 Rovno, Ukraine - d. January 30, 1980 Ottawa) arrived in Ottawa on July 8, 1921. They were among the large group of immigrants that fled Russia and its programs in the early 1920's. They operated, Lithwick's, a wholesale and retail store in the Byward Market for 12 years. In 1937, the entire family left Ottawa for Melbourne, Australia where Dora’s father, brothers and uncles had immigrated. Because of an epidemic of infantile paralysis, they returned to Ottawa 15 weeks after their initial departure. Another reason was the unexpected aspect that the Lithwicks would be starting again as immigrants in Australia and learning a new set of rules and regulations for business. Upon their return, Abraham Lithwick turned to real estate and became more involved in the Jewish community. He died in 1953 after a short illness. Shortly after, Dora Lithwick began working toward establishing a home for elderly Jewish people. In 1963, the sod was turned for Hillel Lodge on Wurtemburg Street. Dora Lithwick was a founder and first President of the Ottawa Jewish Home for the Aged. In 1975, she was instrumental in having a religious chapel added to the home and it carried the name Abraham and Dora Lithwick Beth Midrash.
Notes
1. Dora’s father in Australia was working in real estate. 2. Interview with Dora Lithwick gives an excellent overview of shop life during the depression in Ottawa.

Scope and Content
Kalman asks Dora (Rosenberg) Lithwick (b. 1897) about her life from her earliest memories in Russia to her immigration to Ottawa, Canada as a married woman in 1923. She tells her detailed story in a lively, heavily accented voice. She recalls how hard they worked building up their grocery business in the market and explained that they were worn out by 1937. They decided to sell the business and move to Australia to be with her father and brothers and start a new life. However, life for a newcomer was more difficult than they imagined and after just one month they decided to return to Ottawa where they began investing in real estate. The recording ends with a story of how they purchased a property on Bank Street using a pedlar as an agent during the depression.

History / Biographical
Abraham Dworkin was born in Russia in 1879 and died in Ottawa on April 13, 1951. He married Deborah Azmier who died June, 1922. Abraham's second wife was Fanny Saipe. Abraham and Deborah had eight children: Sarah, Ben (b. March 25, 1900 d. 1994, aged 94), Rose, Fay, Nel (also seen as Nell), Alex, Helen and Clara. Ben Dworkin was a public servant and reporter who wrote for multiple publications including the Ottawa Citizen and the Ottawa Jewish Bulletin and Review. He was the crime reporter for the Citizen in the late 1940's and early 1950's. The Dworkin family is best known in Ottawa for their store, Dworkin Furs, which began in 1901. Its original location was at 256 Rideau St. The store closed in 2012 due to falling sales as fur went out of fashion, and it, along with Ottawa's Burkholder Furs, was purchased by Global Fur Inc. out of Montreal. The home itself likely should have been designated a heritage building with protected status but by May, 2014 the home was the last remaining house on that stretch of Rideau Street downtown and it was demolished to make way for a modern condominium building (the City specifically stated that it no longer fit the context of the rest of the street).
