History / Biographical
Abraham Lithwick (b. 1897 Ritziv, Russia - d. 1953 Ottawa) and Dora (Rosenberg) Lithwick (b. 1897 Rovno, Ukraine - d. January 30, 1980 Ottawa) arrived in Ottawa on July 8, 1921. They were among the large group of immigrants that fled Russia and its programs in the early 1920's. They operated, Lithwick's, a wholesale and retail store in the Byward Market for 12 years. In 1937, the entire family left Ottawa for Melbourne, Australia where Dora’s father, brothers and uncles had immigrated. Because of an epidemic of infantile paralysis, they returned to Ottawa 15 weeks after their initial departure. Another reason was the unexpected aspect that the Lithwicks would be starting again as immigrants in Australia and learning a new set of rules and regulations for business. Upon their return, Abraham Lithwick turned to real estate and became more involved in the Jewish community. He died in 1953 after a short illness. Shortly after, Dora Lithwick began working toward establishing a home for elderly Jewish people. In 1963, the sod was turned for Hillel Lodge on Wurtemburg Street. Dora Lithwick was a founder and first President of the Ottawa Jewish Home for the Aged. In 1975, she was instrumental in having a religious chapel added to the home and it carried the name Abraham and Dora Lithwick Beth Midrash.
Notes
1. Dora’s father in Australia was working in real estate. 2. Interview with Dora Lithwick gives an excellent overview of shop life during the depression in Ottawa.

Scope and Content
Kalman asks Dora (Rosenberg) Lithwick (b. 1897) about her life from her earliest memories in Russia to her immigration to Ottawa, Canada as a married woman in 1923. She tells her detailed story in a lively, heavily accented voice. She recalls how hard they worked building up their grocery business in the market and explained that they were worn out by 1937. They decided to sell the business and move to Australia to be with her father and brothers and start a new life. However, life for a newcomer was more difficult than they imagined and after just one month they decided to return to Ottawa where they began investing in real estate. The recording ends with a story of how they purchased a property on Bank Street using a pedlar as an agent during the depression.

History / Biographical
Esther Dorsky (Dorskaya) immigrated from Russia in 1926. She was unmarried and probably came to Ottawa to join her cousin in the Evenchick family who had already settled in Ottawa. Archie Goldfield immigrated from Elizabetgrad, Kherson, Russia in 1899 with his parents Myer and Annie, his two brothers Ben and Charles, a sister Pearl, and his grandmother, also named Pearl Goldfield. Esther and Archie were married on April 1, 1928 by Rabbi Jacob Mirsky. Esther and Archie had no children. Initially, Archie opened a butcher shop with his father Myer and later went into business with his brother Charles. Esther similarly worked in her husband's shop. When the business was moved from Bank Street to the Byward market, Charles moved into the drover side of cattle while Archie continued the butcher shop and was active in the Jewish community. Charles’s sons, Morley Goldfield (m. Diane Aultschuler) and Jack Goldfield (d. October 9, 1991), worked in their uncle Archie's store on Saturdays and holidays in the 1940's. The Byward location, on Murray Street near Anglesea Square sold, among other products, hot dogs and smoked meats. They always had a stand at the annual Ottawa Exhibition. Charles’s wife Eva operated the Ottawa Kosher Catering Service until her sudden death in 1957. She was the only Jewish caterer in Ottawa for much of the time she was in business.
