Scope and Content
The fonds conists of family and government correspondence, family photographs, publications, manuscripts, and newspaper excerpts and sections, produced through the activities of Rachel Kaminsky during her life in Montreal. It is composed of the following: 1) Correspondence, handwritten in English, Yiddish and Polish, mostly from Australia, France, Poland, Israel, and USA, (1937-1995); 2) Newspaper sections and clippings about Montreal Jewish writers, literature, art and poetry, (1958-1994); 3) Writer Solomon Ary, including manuscripts, book chapters, and correspondence about his work, (1979-1991); 4) Family photographs, ([ca.1900-1910]-1998); 5) Personal documents, (1975-1996); and 6) documents relating to Harry Kaminsky's military service and death, (1941-19). Discarded from the collection was 5 cm of packing materials, blank paper, duplicate photocopies, non-Jewish advertisements and crafting patterns.

History Biographical
Born in Poland (probably the city Wroclaw) in 1905, Rachel Lea Kaminsky immigrated to Canada with her son Hertz/Harry sometime in the early 1930s. In 1941, after Hertz's underage enlistment into the army at the age of 16, Rachel intereved and had him transferred to the merchant marines where he perished at sea. While in Montreal, despite modest means, she gave both moral and material support to many local artists and writers. She died on February 24, 1999 in Montreal.
Custodial History
Following her death, this collection was held by Mrs. Kaminsky's friends Miriam Cohen, and then Florence Silverstone, who donated the collection to the archives.

History Biographical
Solomon Kastner was born in Europe 1886 (circa). He received rabbinical ordination in Romania. He served as cantor of the Shaarey Zedek, in Winnipeg, while his friend Solomon Frank was Rabbi. He left for Toronto in 1945 and pursued other work until, with S. Frank's help, he obtained the position of cantor at Montreal's Shearith Israel Spanish and Portuguese synagogue. He had 4 children, 3 sons and a daughter. He died in Montreal in 1957.

The collection was donated by Elizabeth Kastner, daughter of S. Kastner.

History Biographical
Solomon Abel came to Canada from Russia via the United States, entering Canada in 1907. His six children (as of 1914) included daughter Annie, whose school documents are in this collection. Another daughter was the mother of Jack Silverstone, the donor. Mr Silverstone was the Executive Vice-President of Canadian Jewish Congress. These early immigration and school documents, all originals, are important for their display potential - one includes a photo and describes the subject's profession and Hebrew marriage.
