History Biographical
Leon Fine (b. March 4, 1886 - d. Ottawa, August 11, 1982) was born Riven Leib Fain (Romanian) in Hertsa, Chernivtsi, Ukraine. He was also known as Reuven Lev Fine and Louis Fine. He was the son of Isaac Itsu Fine (b. circa 1842) and Sara Yenta Fript (b. circa 1853), and the brother of Devorah. He was also the half brother of Victoria Fain de Zaidman. He arrived in Canada at age 20 in 1907. He married Rachel Feller (Rachel Fine) (Rae Fine) (b. July 20, 1892) on July 6, 1910. Rachel was the daughter of Joseph Feller and Anna Saltzberg (Anna Feller) (b. Romania, 1866 - d. Ottawa, March 17, 1921). Rachel's immigration record shows she arrived in Portland, Maine, on March 4, 1910, on the ship Haverford as a tourist. Her profession was given as a dressmaker and her destination was marked as Ottawa. Leon and Rachel had two daughters together; Anne Fine (Anne Mirsky) (b. Ottawa, January 31, 1916) and Sarah Fine (Sarah Shaffer) (b. Ottawa, March 3, 1918). Leon was described as a "clothier". Leon and Rachel's granddaughter, Marilyn Hope Shaffer, married Daniel Kimmel on June 8, 1965.
