- Leon Fine (b. March 4, 1886 - d. August 11, 1982 Ottawa) was born Riven Leib Fain (Romanian) in Hertsa, Chernivtsi, Ukraine. He was also known as Reuven Lev Fine and Louis Fine. Leon was the son of Isaac Itsu Fine (b. ca. 1842) and Sara Yenta Fript (b. ca. 1853), and the brother of Devorah. Sura Yenta died when he was a child. Itsu had been married previously and remarried again following Sura Yenta’s death. Leon had two half-sisters, one from his father’s previous wife, and one from his third wife as well as two full sisters. Itsu was a baker of flat-breads (pitar). It was said that Leon avoided conscription in the Romanian military by “laying low” in his late-teenage years. He left his hometown in 1907, travelling to the Austrian border (Chernovitz) disguised as a woman. He arrived in Montreal, where it is believed he was met by his relative David Schlaer. Leon arrived in Canada at age 20 in 1907 and in 1910 moved to Ottawa and married Rachel Feller (Rae (Feller) Fine) (b. July 20, 1892 - d. unknown), an 18 year old orphaned immigrant from Hirlau, Romania on July 6, 1910. Rachel was the daughter of Joseph Feller (b. unknown - d. October 7, 1974) and Anna Saltzberg (b. 1866 Romania - d. March 17, 1921 Ottawa). Leon was a clothier by occupation. Rachel's immigration record shows she arrived in Portland, Maine, on March 4, 1910, on a ship named the Haverford as a tourist. Her profession was given as a dressmaker and her destination was marked as Ottawa. Leon and Rachel had two daughters in Ottawa; Anne (Fine) Mirsky (b. January 31, 1916 - d. December 25, 2003) married Norman Mirsky, and Sarah (Fine) Shaffer (b. March 3, 1918 - d. July 3, 2012) married Milton Shaffer. Sarah and Milton Shaffer had 3 daughters, Ingrid Shapiro (Sam Shapiro), Marilyn Kimmel (Daniel Kimme, married June 8, 1965) and Wendy Green (Michael Green). In Ottawa, he was a dry-goods merchant and eventually moved into retailing men’s and women’s clothes. He was a member of Congregation Beth Shalom and an active participant in the Hebrew Free Loan Society of Ottawa. Leon returned to Europe several times before the Second World War, in 1922-23, 1927-28, 1933-34, and 1938. For his 1927 return to Romania, as a British subject, he sought pardon of Queen Marie (granddaughter of Queen Victoria) for having left Romania as a young man without having done his military service. On at least one of his overseas voyages, he visited the Holy Land and travelled to the Western Wall and the Dead Sea.
