History / Biographical
Anna (Kentorowitz) Lazear (b. 1902) and Samuel Lazear (b.1895- d.1959) and their two children Arthur (b.1926- d. 2001) and Sonia (b.1923) travelled from Minsk to Riga, Latvia, and on to England. They arrived at Quebec City on the Montairn in October, 1927. They were sponsored by Anna’s brother David, deputy mayor of Newark, New Jersey, and Samuel’s brothers in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. The United States was their first choice but immigration restrictions prevented that destination. The family had a distant cousin in Ottawa who initially accommodated the Lazears along with Anna’s brother Arthur and sister Sonia who also made the voyage. Samuel Lazear was a salesman in a By Ward Market shop. In later years he and Anna opened a small jewellery shop called The Jewel Box. Anna was very active in World War II volunteer work and is remembered as a “very kind and generous person”.
