- History / Biographical
- In the May 23, 1944 edition of the Ottawa Jewish Bulletin a call was made to parents to register their children with the Ottawa Hebrew Sunday School. It is not clear if this call eventually led to the regular feature of male birth announcements starting in 1946. It would appear that the published names were actually records of circumcision because it is noted in the September 25, 1946 edition that names of baby girls should be sent to the office of the Va'ad Ha'ir as according to the article the Bulletin had "no other way of securing them." This Series lists the names children born in Ottawa's Jewish Community as they appeared in birth announcements in the Ottawa Jewish Bulletin. Additional birth records have been added from the Beth Shalom Congregation's "Birth Cards." Listings originating from the Beth Shalom records are annotated with "(BSC)" or "(VAAD)"; listings without an annotation originate from Ottawa Jewish Bulletin Announcements.

- This garment was worn by babies born to the Nadler family for brit milah (naming ceremonies) in 1921, 1951, 1964 and 1990, as well as pidyon haben ceremonies or "redemption of the firstborn son," a ceremony which takes place one month after the baby's birth. The father redeems his firstborn son by giving five silver coins to a kohen or priest, who is considered to be direct male descendents of Aaron. This is a traditional Jewish ritual most commonly practiced among Orthodox and Conservative Jews. The garment was worn by Carl Goffman (b. 1921 - d. 2000), Howard Irwin Nadler (b.1951), Phillip Shames (b.1964), and Haley Laura Wasserman (b. 1990).
