History / Biographical
Samuel Abbey Epstein was born April 12th or 13th, 1920 in Ottawa. His parents, Shneer Zalman Epstein (known as Solomon to the secular world and Zalman to his family) and Sadie (Surah Zelda) Rosenfeld were married in 1900. Sam grew up on Clarence Street and Stewart Street in Sandy Hill. Later, he and his wife Eva lived on Besserer Street. Sam was a brother to Hynda Epstein Wiehl, Bertha Epstein Fink, Harry Epstein, Mike Emerson, Gabriel Epstein, Joe Emerson, Fanny Epstein Rachlin, Goldie Epstein (Sacksner) Nestor.
Notes
1. Family tree and anecdotes donated by Jerald Landau in April 1997. 2. Hagaddot and books donated by Sam and Eva Epstein in Jan. 1994. 3. Sam Epstein does not appear to be related to David Epstein who had a brother named Solomon. This Solomon was not Sam Epstein's father as they were from different parts of Europe. 4. Transferred the book entitled; "The Vanished World, Jewish Cities, Jewish People" published in New York 1947 by Raphael R. Abraovitch, Alexander Kahn and Sol Rifkin to Greenberg Families Library collection. It contains over 500 images of life in Poland before the second world war. 5. See Sam Epstein and Samuel D. Goldstein's notes to the Ottawa Jewish Historical Society about various hotels (including one owned by Sarah and Solomon Epstein) contained in the Carlsbad Springs Subject File.
