Dawn Logan watched this video in March, 2006 and was quite impressed by the Marcovitch Farm story as related by Dorothy Karp. She gave an excellent progression of life on the farm and the final expropriation for the Ottawa Airport. There is a short entry on the Marcovitch Farm in the book entitled Bowesville: a place to remember. I am going to write Dorothy Karp for information, e.g. a photograph perhaps. I spoke to Shirley Berman about the evening presentation and apparently Peaches and Cream corn was served at the end of the meeting.

Graduated from McGill with an electrical engineering degree. Came to the National Research Council and worked there for 35 years, in electrical and communications Hymie has worked closely with the Ottawa Jewish community and its charity organizations. President of the Maziki Hadas from 1997-1999. Served on the Ottawa Torah Institute as treasurer. In 1995 he and other genealogists, founded the Jewish Genealogical Society of Ottawa. This group won an award from the international Jewish Genealogical society. They photographed all the gravestones in an Jewish Cemetery. Hymie thanks Shirley for the introduction and introduces his talk Acknowledges that Jewish family records were destroyed in the Holocaust, but many do still exist Discusses how to start you own genealogy including recalling what you know, getting out documents and photos, record names you find, interview relatives, search for names Discusses how and when Jewish families adopted family names, and how the spelling of those names changed when they came to North America Discusses how to find different spellings of names, using the source “Where Once We Walked” and jewishgen.org or jgsn.org In Ottawa, there is the Ottawa Jewish Archives and the Jewish Historical society, that has marriage records, photographs, biographical files and bulletins Discusses how to find arrival information from 1919-1935 online. Pre 1919 is harder if you do not know the exact year. Government Canada and the Genealogy centre website has research tools for finding immigration records. The family Centre of Prince of Wales drives also has different certificates available from 1869-1907. These records are also available online Discusses the different ways you can find birth, marriage, and death certificates at different Ontario institutions Different countries also have large collections of Jewish records, including the United States, Lithuania, Poland, Hungary. Gabriel Drouin in 1941 in Montreal went around the province and collected all the birth and marriage records. Marriage and Death records are available at LAC from 1926- 1936. Paperman and Sons have funeral records for Montreal, and the large Jewish cemetery records are available online at jewishgen.org Canadian Congress Archives also have plenty of records In Toronto, the archives and 2 main funeral chapels and the City of Toronto archives have records on Jewish families as well. Many jewish marriage records from Ottawa are actually from Montreal, and are located through the Drouin records and online through the Montreal Genealogy Society. Uses the example of how he found his parents wedding certificate in Montreal, and it gave him information about his parents and grandparents. Canadian Naturalization records are the most important records- The Jewish Gen. societies of Montreal and Ottawa cooperated in indexing their records between 1915-1932 for these records. Discusses how he used the Canadian naturalization records to find his wife’s family Discusses the use of Ancestry.com and Rootsweb as websites to find records. Stresses the importance of using maiden names when researching. Discusses the different passenger lists from different American cities that are available through Ancestry or the genealogy society Canadian censuses are also useful for finding records. Discusses different organizations in New York that also hold records including the New York Public Library, and the National Archives of the Northeast Region. Discusses how he was able to use the resources listed to find his family's history Discusses the history books written about shtiebels [?] but people from before the war, and they contain different stories. Different archival institutions have these shteibel [?] history books. Dorothy Nadolny (Arron) Thursday, January 11th, 1934 - Monday, February 13th, 2023 It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we inform you of the passing of Dorothy Nadolny. Dorothy was born in Ottawa on January 11, 1934 and she passed away on her terms on February 13th, 2023 at 9:35 pm. She died peacefully at home surrounded by her family. Beloved wife of the late Herbert Nadolny, loving and devoted mother to her four children Ellen Cherney (Frank Grimsley), Sharon Weinstein (Lawrence), Lawrence Nadolny (Chantelle) and Lynda Nadolny (Bruce Cowley). Dorothy was a cherished Bubby to her 14 grandchildren: Allison Cherney (Justin Roth), Jason Cherney (Lauren Posen), Carolyn Ross (Spencer), Daniel Cherney (Vanessa), Amy Weinstein (Iain Callingham), Erica Weinstein (Josh Broderson), Jonathan Weinstein (Carly), Mark Nadolny (Jenn), Joey Nadolny, Jayme Nadolny (Moises Albanes ), Matthew Nadolny, Ben Cowley (Jordyn), Rebecca Pozner (Joseph) and Noa Cowley. Dorothy was also blessed with 9, soon to be 10 great grandchildren. Dorothy was predeceased by her three older brothers, Louis, Jack and Larry Arron. Thank you to her devoted and loving caregivers: Rosemarie, who has been part of the family for 30 years; Candice, Gretchen and Katrina who are newer to the family and so valued for their tenderness and love. Thank you to Dr. Nevins for her extraordinary care over the years. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 15 at 2pm at Congregation Machzikei Hadas, 2310 Virginia Drive, Ottawa. Interment to follow at Jewish Memorial Gardens, 2692 Bank Street Ottawa. Shiva will be observed at 3645 Revelstoke (home of Sharon and Lawrence Weinstein) on Wednesday evening, Thursday and Friday until 4pm. Shiva services at 10am and 5:15pm. Shiva will continue in Toronto and Hollywood, Florida. Donations may be made to the Ottawa Jewish Community Foundation: the Dorothy and Herbert Nadolny fund. 613-798-4696 extension 274

1. Talk took place at Agudath Israel synagogue. 2. Dr. Truda Rosenberg is introduced by Ros Wallock. Dr. Rosenberg first speaks about her husband Imre's life and then her own experience. She came to Ottawa in 1958 while her husband came here as a Polish refugee in 1949. He was not able to practice law in Ottawa but after a series of menial jobs, did go to work for lawyer Sam Berger. Imre was helped by Rabbi Lifschutz who invited him to dinner on Shabbat every week. He painted throughout his life, even when he was extremely poor. Born in Slovakia in 1913, he was the son of an Orthodox rabbi. He became a Zionist leader who worked to smuggle out Jews to Czechoslovakia and send Jews to Palestine. He served under Churchill during the war in Britain and brought 301 Jewish orphans from Theresenstadt to England. Truda read an excerpt from a book about Imre's life called "A Jew in Deed". Imre died in 1986. Dr. Truda Rosenberg goes on to describe her remarkable life. She grew up in Poland and experienced the Jewish ghetto before being captured and sent in a cattle car bound for the Belzec extermination camp. She jumped from the train and survived the war by assuming a new identity as a Catholic and later a German refugee from Poland. Apparently, with her honey blond hair, blue eyes and light colouring, she did not "look Jewish". After the liberation of the camps, she worked as an interpreter for the British Army because she spoke several languages. After her war experience she realized that she wanted to "serve", so she went to England to train as a nurse. Her entire family was lost during the Holocaust, so she came to Ottawa to become a public health nurse. She worked in the market area where the poor Jewish and non-Jewish families lived. Truda met her husband Imre who was selling real estate when she was investing in a house. She was not affiliated with any synagogue at this time, but was busy studying psychology and eventually became a psychologist. In 1971, the Rosenbergs made aliya and together they learned to speak Hebrew. Truda set up an oral history program about the Holocaust in Israel, worked as a psychologist and lectured at Haifa University. Imre helped settle new immigrants from the Soviet Union. They returned to Ottawa in 1980 where Truda set up a private practice as a clinical psychologist and Imre worked for the Federal Government's Refugee Advisory Committee. He died in 1986. Truda was invited to lecture at the University of Warsaw. She visited the Belzec extermination camp where her family died. Remembering her mother's parting words, Truda assured her that she had kept her Jewish soul. Truda answered a few questions from the audience and was presented with a gift from Stuart Lazear.
