History / Biographical: The Jewish Legion was the name for five battalions of Jewish volunteers established by the British Army as the 38th and 39th Battalions of the Royal Fusiliers during the First World War, in Palestine who fought for the liberation of Erez Israel [region] from the Turkish rule. It was formed when Britain began his war against the Ottoman Turks. At the same time, Zionist [A Jewish political movement that arose in the late 19th century in response to growing anti-Semitism and sought to reestablish a sovereign Jewish homeland in Palestine.] around the world saw an opportunity to promote the idea of a Jewish National Homeland in Palestine; therefore, some Jewish people raised the idea of the formation of a Jewish unit that would participate to conquer Palestine. At the beginning of the war, the British government opposed the participation of such as group of people in Palestine, but in 1917 ultimately, the formation of a Jewish regiment was officially announced. The Legion also named the Zion Mule Corps, made up Jewish from different countries such as Britain, Russia, the United States and Canada, served on the Gallipoli front in 1915-1916, and also in the Jordan Valley in 1918. The Jewish Legion was a unique regiment who had been awarded, in the late 1919, a distinctive cap badge; a menorah. After the war, some of the members returned to their respective countries while others settled in Palestine to realize their Zionist aspirations.

History / Biographical: Anna Wolfe Margosches was born in New York, daughter of Max and Rachael Wolfe. Max Wolfe was a furrier and from Poland. Anna Wolfe attended Loretta College in Toronto and was married in 1911. She pursued a heightened, social outlet for women in Ottawa. She gave lectures and recitals at the Chateau Laurier and directed pageants. In 1934, she founded the Lord Reading Club which met once a month at the Chateau Laurier. She was an intellectual and was very much a society person. She did not pursue any Zionist causes. She was also a trained musician and sang at Dr. Geldart's radio station in Ottawa. She had a daughter, Sylvia who married Arnold Haltrecht, and was a cousin of Barney Danson the Federal Government cabinet minister.

Acquisition Source: Speeches, newspaper clipping, and "How to honour the flag code" donated by Merle Haltrecht-Matte, February, 2001. Song book donated in 2011.

Creator: Bension, Ariel

History / Biographical: A descendant of an illustrious Sephardic family, Dr. Bension was a brilliant scholar both in religious and secular studies. An active Zionist, he travelled all over the world on behalf of Keren Hayesod. He wrote numerous articles on Arab-Jewish relations, on poetic and philosophical topics and on mysticism. His work on the "The Zohar in Moslem and Christian Spain" was acclaimed by Jews and non-Jews alike. Dr. Bension married Ida Seigler, a Montrealer, in 1925.
