History / Biographical
Herman Halpern was born in Austria, around 1873 and arrived in Canada with his wife Dena Fox, their infant daughter, and his brothers Shmuel and Gabriel. They first lived in Western Canada, possibly in Saskatchewan. After Dena died in 1902 from complications during childbirth, Herman's sister-in-law arrived to help care for the family. Herman Halpern's nephew was Monty Hall, a radio game show host in Toronto. Herman Halpern married his sister-in-law and moved to Ottawa in the second decade of the twentieth century. He operated a butcher shop on McGee Street. His children included Donald, Charlie, Lily, Alfred, Lawrence, Sidney and Teresa. He died in Ottawa in 1928. Charlie was also a butcher, first on Mc Gee Street in his father’s shop and then at the corner of Murray and Nelson. On Murray and Nelson he worked for Mr. Saslove, and when Mr. Saslove moved to St. Patrick and constructed a building with refrigeration, Charlie Halpern bought the Saslove business. One of Herman’s children, Sidney, was a field scientist with the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources for 35 years until his death in 1982. He was honoured posthumously with the naming of the Halpern River; a north flowing river close to Cape Clarence on Somerset Island, North West Territories. He married Freda Fagin in 1941.
Notes
1. According to family lore Herman arrived as part of the Baron de Hirsch immigration plan but Dr. Gary Viner could not find his name in the National Archives listings. Halpern apparently was changed from Hirschhorn. 3. Family lore also states that Herman played French horn, fought in the Russian army and left his homeland hurriedly because he killed someone in a duel.
