- History / Biographical
- Moses Bilsky was born in Kovno, Lithuania in 1829. He married Pauline Reich in Brooklyn, New York in 1874 and resided in Ottawa for most of his married life, with the exception of a few years in both Mattawa, Ontario and Montreal, Quebec. He died in Ottawa on January 4, 1923. Pauline died December 3, 1928. He had an adventurous early life traveling to the Caribou gold fields of British Columbia in 1862, then to San Francisco on horseback and flirting with gun-running to Mexico. By 1878, Moses Bilsky was operating as a pawnbroker in Ottawa. Within two years, he has relocated to Mattawa, and between 1885 and 1891 he worked as a merchant and pawnbroker in Montreal. Sometime in 1891, he moved back to Ottawa and began a successful watch, clock, and jewellery business. He participated fully in Jewish community life and is credited with acquiring the city’s first Torah scroll from New York. He was also a founder of Ottawa’s first synagogue, Adath Jeshurun in 1892. “Mr Bilsky’s funeral was one of the largest ever held in Ottawa and during his long residence there, he shared the universal respect of the entire community, both Jewish and Christian”. He had a large family with 11 children - three of Bilsky’s sons-in-law became prominent; A. J. (Archie) Freiman married his daughter Lillian, who became successful in her own right, and established a large department store, as well as served as president of the Zionist Organizations of Canada. Abraham Jacobs of Montreal married his daughter Rebecca, and became a Member of Parliament. Allan Bronfman of Winnipeg married his third daughter Lucy, and was a lawyer, industrialist and community activist.
