History / Biographical
David Slover (b. January 22, 1897, Suchawa, Austria) immigrated from Austria to Montreal at the age of 12 in 1908 and later arrived as a young man in Ottawa from Montreal in 1922. David moved to Ottawa because he had an Uncle living in the area. It was during his early years in Ottawa that he received his early dramatic training in Montreal under the guidance of B. Z. Goldberg. David was active in the local theatre community, and organized the Ottawa Jewish Literary and Dramatic Society which presented regular dramatic performances. He also acted as the dramatic director of Ottawa Young Judaea between 1924 and 1934. In 1935 he assisted with the first Jewish Drama Festival in Canada and directed the Ottawa production entitled “His children” which won second place. Also in 1935 he became the director of the Jewish Theatre Guild (Ottawa Jewish Theatre Guild). He consistently endeavoured to raise the cultural level of those interested in drama. By 1937, he had directed forty-nine plays. For many years David Slover was the motivating force behind Jewish dramatic productions in Ottawa and was well known to the theatre going public at large. He was a member of the Ottawa Drama League, starred in numerous plays, and also directed and produced a great number. The last play of the Jewish Theatre Guild was “The world of Sholom Aleichem”, produced and directed by David Slover in the Jewish Community Centre in 1956 and his son Norman assisted with the lighting. He also played the role of Mendele, the bookseller. David Slover was in business in Ottawa, operating the Mannequin Dress Shop on Bank Street. At one time he had two shops on Bank Street. Later he expanded with Morley’s on Elgin, one on Wellington and eventually one in Hull. He was helped by his wife and eventually his son Morley joined the family business. He married Belle Flesher of Ottawa in 1936 and they and had three children, Norman (married Sandra Levine), Morley and Beverley.
