- History / Biographical
- Louis Davis was born in Rumania in 1880 and came to Canada in 1900 at which time he took up residence in Ottawa. One year later he married Ida Horwitz (1875-1957). Reverend Jacob Mirsky officiated the ceremony at 464 Sussex Street. Louis went into business retailing second hand goods. The business was first based out of the home of his father-in-law at 481 Wellington Street and eventually he operated a 5¢ to $1 store on Sparks Street, which later became the location of the Cavendish Cafe. Louis and Ida were childless and adopted a daughter, Ruth, who later married Hugo Levendel. Louis passed away in April 1941. In his obituary he was remembered as “one of the most prominent members of the Jewish community in the Capital, and treasurer of the Adath Jeshurun Congregation”. He also assumed prominent roles in many other Jewish organizations. Louis had a younger brother, John (Jack) Bercovitch Davis, born in Rumania on November 24, 1890. Jack enlisted in the 38th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force in July, 1915. After serving in Canada, Bermuda and England, he was discharged in 1919. He died in Ottawa in 1975.
