- History / Biographical
- Bernard Smith arrived in Canada from Russia in the early 1890's. In 1894 he married Mina (Z. Rebecca Reinstein) who had arrived in 1889. Their marriage was performed by Reverend Jacob Mirsky and was the first recorded Jewish wedding in Ottawa. The Smiths are among the early Jewish pioneer families in Ottawa. They became Naturalized Canadian citizens in 1902. They had four children including Essie (b. Nov. 1895 (married Carl Fine)), Kalman (b. June, 1898 (married Sylvia Gould and had Robert and Barbara Cohen), Jules (b. April, 1900) and Fanny (b. Oct. 1901 (married Abe Betcherman)). Bernard Smith (Barney) was a fruit peddlar. He was also founding member of the Adath Jeshurun Congregation, with his signature recorded at an April 25, 1892 meeting.
