- History / Biographical
- Rachel Wolinsky was born in the very small village of Delyatich in Belarus and moved to Canada when she was a young teenager. She married Moses Bessin in Ottawa in June 1907 at the Rideau Street Shul. They lived with Rachel's parents for the first year of their marriage at 9 St. Joseph Street. Moses, who died in 1923, operated two dry goods stores; one on Beechwood Avenue and another on Wellington Street. Hyman (Hy) Bessin (1910-1979) was Moses and Rachel's only son among eight children. Two sisters are Lilly (Bessin) Lang and Bertha (Bessin) Sokol. Hy attended Eastview and Crichton Street Public Schools and graduated from Lisgar Collegiate in 1926. Bertha (Bessin) Sokol had a son, Reuben Sokol, living in Toronto as of 2012. Initially Hy worked in dry goods stores in various locations, and then branched into business for himself in Winchester, Ontario where he established the Hy Bessin Department Store, a wholesale egg business, and a hotel. In 1946 he bought the Eastview Bus Service Ltd., which he sold in 1951 when Vanier amalgamated with Ottawa. From the 1950s on he was involved in several other business ventures, including time as a major distributor of automotive parts and industrial supplies, as well as real estate. In 1942, Hy married Marion Friedman (b. 1920- d. 1981) of the Bronx, New York. They had four children; Leya, Moshe, Benjamin Berl, and Herschel. Between 1951 and 1956, Hy served as president and chairman of the board of the Mizrachi Zionist Organization of Canada (the religious wing of the Zionist movement). In Israel he was on the Board of Yeshiva University and also associated with Shaare-Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem. Hyman Bessin was president of the Ottawa Vaad Ha’Ir in 1962 and helped establish the Young Israel Synagogue in Ottawa.
