- History / Biographical
- Herman (b.1916 - d.2001) and Zelda Roodman (d. January 17, 1999) were born in Ottawa. Their parents, the late Louis and Freda Roodman and the late Max and Miriam (Petegorsky) (d. June 5, 1973) Dworkin, were pioneers of the Ottawa Jewish community. Through the years, they were actively identified with numerous communal endeavors. Herman and Zelda were married by Rabbi Oscar Fasman on November 30, 1941 and had one daughter, Joy (b.March 10, 1949) (m. Richard Karp) who moved to Whitehorse, Yukon. Herman Roodman wrote a detailed chronological overview of the Ottawa Jewish community entitled "Looking Back: a historical chronicle of our community for the years 1857 - 1987". During World War II while Herman was Battalion Instructor for the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders, he was commissioned to compile a history of those who fell on active service. In 1952, he wrote a historical narrative of the Adath Jeshurun on the occasion of the Congregation 60th anniversary. Later, to mark the official opening of the Beth Shalom Synagogue in 1956, he compiled the dedication booklet for the newly established congregation. Mr. Roodman and his wife Zelda co-authored their first book Effective Business Communications and a second book ion the topic in 1973.
