- History / Biographical
- Morton Taller was born in Ellenville, New York in 1919 to Jacob and Ethyl Taller (Tallifsky). The Tallers moved to Ottawa in 1921. At seventeen, Morton Taller volunteered for the Royal Canadian Air Force in World War II, and went overseas in December, 1941 on the S.S. Cuba, arriving in Liverpool, England. After being repatriated to Canada in December, 1944 he was discharged in February, 1945. When he returned to Ottawa, Taller operated the West End Meat Market located at 989 Wellington Street. About five years later, along with his brother Archie Taller and brother-in-law Morris Saslove, he operated Albert’s Meat Market at 71 William Street. The business was sold in 1975. Mr. Taller's activities in the Jewish community included being chairman of the Jewish National Fund, State of Israel bonds and United Jewish Appeal. In 1995 he became Post Commander for the Ottawa Post of the Jewish War Veterans. He married Sally Landau of Cornwall in 1951. They had three daughters: Connie Steinberg (b. December 23, 1955), Beverley Zaifman and Lynda Wakter and one deceased son, Jay Byrne Taller (b. May 30, 1954). Mr Taller passed away June 29, 2010 at the age of 90.
