History Biographical
Joseph Feller was born in Ottawa in 1917 to William and Eva Feller. He passed away January 15, 2015 at the age of 98. Siblings include Sarah, Eddy and Henry Feller. Betty was born in Kiev, Russia and came to Ottawa as an infant with her widowed mother, Malca Goldman. Betty passed away April 9, 2010, at age 94. Joseph and Betty Feller were married in 1939, and would remain married for 71 years, until Betty's passing. They had three children; Connie Gail (late Nathaniel Salomon), Ian Warren (Debby Zweig), and Donna-Lee (David Kauffman). They were Zaida and Bubby of Marshal (Julie Ann) Salomon (and the late Stacey Arbeiter); Margot Salomon (Martin Scheinin), Justin Salomon, Wendy Kauffman (Natan Treitel), and Adam (Deborah) Kauffman, and 9 great-grandchildren. Joseph Feller opened Feller's Men's Wear (also referred to as 'Esquire') in 1937. He retired from the clothing retail and manufacturing business on June 30, 1972 when he sold the business to Elks. His first store was a 9'6 by 65 foot shop at 109 Rideau street; in 1948 the business moved to 139 Rideau Street "The door way to a Man's World" ; in 1955 the store was expanded to occupy 139-141 Rideau Street, a 24,000 square foot store over three floors. In 1967 he opened a second store of 13,000 square feet in the St. Laurent Shopping Centre. Joseph is past president of the Rideau Street Merchant's Association, was a president of the National Retail Merchants Association with headquarters in New York City, which had a membership of over 11000 stores in Canada, the United States and in 41 countries internationally. He received numerous awards for merit and advertising. They played active roles in both Jewish and non-Jewish organisations in the community of Ottawa. Their charitable works included the donation of a study room at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and the formation of a highly successful chapter of "the American Friends of the Hebrew University" in Boca Raton Florida, their winter residence. They were worshipers at both Machzikei Hadas and Agudath Israel in Ottawa, as well as B'nai Torah in Boca Raton and the Spanish-Portuguese Synagogue in Montreal. They were members of the Rideau View Golf Club and the Del-Aire Country Club in Delray, Florida. Locally Joseph was among the original members of the executive of the Hillel Lodge, and a leader in the founding of the Jewish Community Centre. He was a member of B'nai B'rith throughout his adult life; served as chairman of the Salvation Army Red Shield Campaign, was on the board of the Ottawa YMCA, and Ottawa Philharmonic Orchestra. Betty was involved in Hadassah, ORT, Women's B'nai B'rith, Sisterhood, National Council of Jewish Women and many other facets of Jewish life. An open-ended endowment fund was established in their name in 1987. The capital from the Joseph and Betty Feller Endowment Fund is invested in perpetuity and the income each year are distributed to charities in Ottawa that were dear to the couple.
