Next, Dr. Bernard Dolansky, new president of the Ottawa Jewish Community Council is interviewed by Marion about the role of the Va'ad Ha'ir and the services it provides. Jon Braun, Director of Eductation at the Jewish Community Centre speaks about programing for the summer. Cantor Steven Chaiet of the Beth Shalom congregation speaks to Marion about the history of and significance of the Kol Nidre prayer. He then sings this beautiful song written in the aramaic language. The program ends with footage of square dancing couples performing indoors at Scentorama. October 1993 Program: Rona Levine, Chair of Arts Alive speaks about the programs this year. Marion Neuman and Terry Swartzville of Hadassah - Wizo speak to Ed about work of the organization to support women and children in Israel on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of Hadassah Wizo. They view a display showing the history of this group in Ottawa and a youth Aliyah display. Next, Rabbi Ely Braun is interviewed by Marion. He talks about his decision to become a congregational rabbi at Beth Shalom synagogue and his goal to develop a sense of family within the congregation. November 1993 Program: Ed Fine interviews Mordecai Richler. No Sound. Ed Fine and Marion at Arts Alive. No Sound. Next segment includes various testimonials from various people for the United Jewish Appeal. No Sound. Sound starts during interview with co-chairs of the campaign and Sam Firestone, chair. The program ends with Ed and Marion at Arts Alive festival. December 1993 Program: This program starts with the candle lighting ceremony indoors at Parliament Hill. Allen Kirshner reports and Mayor Jacquelin Holzman speaks about the meaning of Chanuka. Cantor Steven Chaiet of congregation Beth Shalom sings as the candles are lit. Host Reesa Aaron visits Rikki Grebler in her home to view her interesting Hanakiot collection. Author Phebe Gilman explains the origin and inspirations for her award winning book "Something from Nothing. She researched the schetl of her grandparents' generation to come up with authentic illustrations. The segment ends after she reads this wonderful children's story. Cantor Pinchas Levinson from Machzikei Hadas finishes the program with a medley of Hanukah songs. January 1994 Program: Rabbi Reuven Bulka speaks to Marion about his new book "Jewish Divorce Ethics" and the implications of a higher divorce rate for the Jewish community. Marion interviews Zelaine Shinder about the resources at the Jewish Education Resource Centre for the general community and educators in Ottawa. The centre, located at 881 Broadview Ave., is sponsored by the Jewish Community Council of Ottawa. Next, author Chaim Potok is interviewed by Marion. He talks about growing up in an orthodox Jewish home during the 1940's and 1950's. He states his books are a model to try to explain to himself how individuals handle cultural confrontations. This segment was videotaped by Jonathon Feldman. The program ends with footage of couples dancing at Agudath Israel to the Big Band sounds of Benny G. Unknown month - Special program on Racism in Schools. Marion and Ed host a panel of guests who speak about anti-semitic incidents in the schools. Later, students from Nepean High School ask questions of the panelists about raising awareness and sensitivity to racism in schools. Panel members include: Ian Kagedan, Dir. of Government Relations of B'nai B'rith Canada, Constable Dan Dunlop of the Bias Crime Unit of the Ottawa Police, Lorne Rachlis, Superintendent of Schools for the Ottawa Board of Education, Ron Singer, Chairman of CRC Ottawa. April 1993 Program: Ed Fine visits the Ottawa Jewish Community Centre Library on Chapel St. He interviews Librarian Estelle Backman who describes the collection and library patrons. Ed also visits an informal singing group called Unzer Gezang who get together in people's homes to sing in Yiddish. Jackie Laugzner and Abe Rosenfeld are interviewed about the experience. May 1994 Program: Abigail Rabinowitz of the Teeny Tots and Tikes Culture Club is interviewed by Shelley Samel. Next, Murray Cohen of the Design Association is interviewed about his firms work on a needs analysis for building a new city hall in downtown Jerusalem which will bring together many offices spread out across the city. Ian Kagedan, Dir. of Government Relations of B'nai B'rith Canada speaks about his research into right-wing extremist groups and his work to raise public awareness of this issue. June 1994 Program: Ed and Marion visit Hillel Academy. Ed interviews Stan Katz, outgoing Director of Education about his experience over the last 10 years. Highlights of "Schindler's List" author Thomas Keneally's speech at the Chateau Laurier appear next. Footage of Hillel Academy's Siddur Ceremony ends the program and the 1993 - 1994 season.
