Ralph Fonberg
History / Biographical
Ralph Fonberg's parents came to Ottawa in 1905 under the sponsorship of Oscar Petigorsky. Ralph was born December 30, 1922. He attended Talmud Torah School on George Street and was a member of A.Z.A. He decided to join the army because his good friends Harry Glatt, Abe Morrison, S. Applebaum and Jack Gordon had joined up. He received basic training in Petawawa in 1941 and worked with a camouflage troop of the Royal Canadian Engineers. He was overseas for eight months and returned in 1944. The main activity of the troop was to go out on foot or motor cycle in advance of the front line and establish a position for headquarters. He did this in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. Ralph Fonberg recalls a Dr. Talner who came to an A.Z.A. meeting to warn returning soldiers of the perils of sexual contact with "questionable women". He also recalled going to a convention in Toronto and one in Montreal with A.Z.A. He was very active at one time producing plays and skits with other A.Z.A. members. He continued working in theatre with David Slover and others in Ottawa.

Joe Viner
History / Biographical
Joe Viner was born in Ottawa November 30, 1925. His paternal grandparents came to Ottawa from Russia with eight of their children in 1913. Joe Viner's mother (Clara Halpern) was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Her parents came from the Austria/Hungary area and immigrated first to Winnipeg and then moved to Ottawa to open a Kosher butcher shop. Joe's father owned a grocery store at Booth and Primrose (225 Booth Street) during the depression. He always had enough to eat because of the store which sold fruit and vegetables. He also peddled fruit and vegetables in Aylmer, Quebec and bought junk within a 60 mile radius of Ottawa and sold it to various local junk dealers. He has memories of going to school and doing homework while watching the store in the evenings. Sundays were the times he played softball with the Jewish boys in the West End, or went by streetcar to the A.Z.A. meetings. During the summer holidays, he used to help his father in the truck when they went to Aylmer to collect scrap for resale. Joe Viner joined the A.Z.A. at age 14. He recalls Irving Aaron, Harry Weltman, Harry Cogan, Joe Osterer, Chick Taylor, Jack Cooper, Syd Kronick, David Loeb, John Greenberg, Willie Zelnick, Jake Cranzberg, Dave Edelson, Seymour Klein, Ezra Cohen who were also members of this B'nai B'rith organization. They held the meetings at the old Talmud Torah building on George Street and had advisors like the late Syd Slover (killed in the Second World War) and the late Justice Honourable Abraham H. Lieff. Joe Viner wanted to be in the air force as part of the air crew. When he joined early in 1944, the only air crew training available was for tail gunners, so that was his only option. Joe completed his basic training in Toronto and then went to Assiniboia, Saskatchewan for initial training as tail gunner. Training was suspended for tail gunners because there were not enough planes. As a trained stenographer and typist, he was put to work in the office and hospital until he was sent back to Ottawa and discharged. Joe went back to high school and obtained enough credits within 6 months to enter Queen's University in the fall of 1945. He graduated from Queen's with a Bachelor of Commerce in 1948 and went to New York to become a retail executive trainee. He spent 3 years in New York and came back to marry Ruth Macy on March 11, 1951 at Agudath Israel Synagogue in Ottawa. They spent their honeymoon in Montreal getting a visa for Ruth to live in the U.S.A. Two weeks after getting back to New York, Joe received a draft call for the Korean War. With advice from the Canadian embassy the Viner's returned to Canada and a deferment was granted. Joe then obtained an executive position with Freiman's where he stayed until 1965 when he entered the real-estate business. In 1969, he started Levinson-Viner Ltd. with Jacie Levinson. He retired in 1996.

History / Biographical
Percy Levine was born in 1921to parents Helena and Charles Levine. They lived at 267 Rochester Street in Ottawa. Percy attended Ottawa Technical School and worked at the Royal Canadian Mint before the war. Percy was also a window dresser at Topps Ladies Wear on Sparks Street. This is where he met his future wife, Corrine Horwitz. He was president of the Moses Bilsky chapter in the early 1940's and asked her to an A.Z.A. picnic. Percy joined the air force at age 19. He was a bomb aimer who was stationed in Newfoundland. He returned from the war to marry Corrine in the living room of her parent’s home on Besserer Street in the summer of 1944 before returning to active duty. After the war, he worked in his wife's family jewelry business, then with his brother-in-law in the grocery business and finally found his niche in real estate in the late 1950's. The Levines lived at 538 Besser with Corrine's parents when they were first married, then moved to their own house on Aylmer Street in Ottawa South. In 1963, they moved to Edgecliff where Percy lived until his death in September of 2007.
