History / Biographical
The Jewish War Veterans of Canada is an organization established to bring together Jewish war veterans from all past wars. The organization was founded in 1969 and at its peak included nine branches, Posts, including the Jewish War Veterans of Canada - Ottawa Post. The book "THERE I WAS..." was an initiative of the Ottawa Post of the Jewish War Veterans in the late 1990's. Spearheaded by Freda Lithwick (first lieutenant nursing sister), the book is a collection of the reminiscences of Ottawa’s Jewish servicemen who fought in World War II. (49% of the population of Jewish men in Ottawa enlisted in military service.) The book was published with the assistance of Cy Torontow, (RCAF wing commander), Elliott Gluck (Lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps), Morrie Konick (RCAF squadron leader), and Morton Baslaw (RCAF leading aircraftsman). Morton Baslaw, retired from the graphic art business, looked after design and layout. More than 50 veterans responded to an appeal for first person stories. History / Biographical
The Witness to History project was developped by the Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre. The first interviews were conducted in the spring of 1994. The Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre’s objective in inaugurating this programme was to record and document as many of the survivors’ histories and experiences as resources permitted. Videotaped interviews are conducted by trained interviewers with emphasis on the survivors’ Holocaust experiences as well as their pre-war lives and their often remarkable post-war efforts to reconstruct normality into their lives in Canada. The Centre’s objective is to continue the Project and provide the facility for those of the Montreal area survivors still willing to come forth and record their experiences towards the education of future generations.

The Ottawa Torah Institute (OTI) is the Ottawa Jewish community high school for boys providing advanced studies in Tanakh, Talmud and Halakha as well as the full Ontario Ministry of Education curriculum for Grades 9 to 12. Founded in 1982, it was Ottawa’s first full-time Jewish high school. In 2001, the Fraser Institute of Canada ranked OTI as the number one high school in the Province of Ontario. The yeshiva is headed by the Israel born HaRav Eliezer Ben-Porat, shlita, who holds several rabbinical ordinations and has authored a number of Hebraic books and articles. He was a commander in the Israel Defence Forces during the Yom Kippur War. The assistant Judaic Principal is Rabbi Dovid Boruch Clinton. Machon Sarah High School was established in 1990, in honour of Sarah Schenirer who pioneered higher Jewish education for young women. It operates at a separate campus while sharing OTI’s teaching staff. Based on the model of the Bais Yaakov schools, the curriculum provides an in depth study of Humash, Navi, Hebrew, Jewish history, laws and customs, coupled with the Grades 9-12 curriculum of the Ontario Ministry of Education.

History / Biographical
In 1993 Suzan Horovitch (née Green) began the task of typing out her uncle Sidney Ofner’s letters, written home to Montreal during his station in Europe in World War II. Sidney Ofner was in Italy when he was killed supporting a trench on January 15, 1944. Suzan Horovitch and her husband Art spent several years compiling into a book the letters as well as official Canadian Forces correspondence regarding Sidney. The Horovitch’s also tracked down and contacted several veterans whom had served with Sidney in order to gather all information possible on his time in the army and his death. Sidney Ofner was the only son of Alexander and Tillie Ofner, both of Montreal. Mr. Ofner ran a women’s ready-to-wear garment store, in which Sidney also worked. He was a graduate of Strathcona Academy. Sidney enlisted in the Victoria Rifles of Canada in 1942, going overseas in 1943. He was later stationed to North Africa with a reinforcement regiment and then with the Royal Canadian Regiment in Italy in the fall of 1943. Sidney’s sister Marjorie, mother of Leona (mentioned in the letters) and Suzan) saved all of the letters from her brother.

History / Biographical
The Torah Study Group was founded in 1983 under the guidance of Dr. Gretl Keren Fischer and Adrienne Packnadal-Powell. Dr. Fischer was Chair of Temple Israel's Adult Education Program at the time and enlisted Adrienne's assistance. The first meeting was held at Dr. Fischer's home with Rabbi Sanford T. Marcus of Temple Israel, who contributed guidelines with his bibliography. The Torah Study Group was formed just as Rabbi Gunther Plaut's Commentaries on the Torah had been published. The group spent approximately 10 years studying his Commentaries. Study sessions were informal and while the number of members fluctuated, membership was at its largest at 18 individuals. The group met every three weeks on a Sunday evening. The group also enjoyed retreats which were divided between outdoor pursuits and Torah study. Core members included Dr. Fischer, Adrienne Packnadal-Powell, Margo Borenstein, Dorothy and Murray Browns, Pearl Greenberg, Elsa and Irwin Waldman, and Teena and Walter Hendelman. As of 2008, the Torah Study Group continued to meet.

History / Biographical
Bio from website: Or Haneshamah is a classic example of a Reconstructionist congregation that began as a grassroots havurah. A fellowship of Jews in Ottawa sought in 1987 to create a space for the observance of Judaism according to Reconstructionist principles. The Ottawa Reconstructionist Havurah gathered for prayer and discussion in members’ homes, consulted with other Jewish communities, and sought guidance from leaders in the movement. Within a few years of its inception, OrH had applied for and received affiliation with the organization that later became the Jewish Federation of Ottawa. The havurah was resolutely member-led, and the frequency of Shabbat services and festival gatherings quickly grew over the years, often energized by the singing and music of the OrH band. The community celebrated its first bar mitzvah in 1994, and has since helped member families observe many weddings, baby namings, conversions, funerals and other life-cycle events. In 1995, OrH acquired a Torah scroll and its first copies of the newly released Reconstructionist prayerbook, which continues to be its primary textual resource for religious observance. Although members took great pride in leading services and running the havurah, OrH brought in rabbis and rabbinical students to help lead high holiday services and occasional shabbatons. The community grew, and it became time to broaden and diversify the resources used to sustain OrH. In 2003-04, the group hired its first paid administrator, modernized its communications, and engaged the first of many senior rabbinical students from the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College to come to Ottawa monthly to lead Shabbat services, teach the b’nei mitzvah group, and provide adult education. In the spirit of Reconstructionist philosophy, OrH takes an interactive and participatory approach to ritual, and is committed to egalitarianism and inclusion in all its practices. The community took on its current Hebrew name, Or Haneshamah, which means “light of the spirit,” in 2009. As members celebrated the group’s 25th anniversary in 2012, they also made a decision that would set OrH on a new path: the congregation would, for the first time, hire a permanent spiritual leader. Rabbi Elizabeth Bolton arrived in August 2013 and, in her short time in Ottawa, has already helped the community to evolve and grow — and to imagine what it might become.
Custodial History
Records were originally owned and collected by Walter and Teena Hendelman who were early founders of ORH. In the late 2010s the documents were donated to ORH where they remained until 2020 where they ended up with Sharon Angel who organized the materials into chronological order and then later, ended up Myra McFarlane. In January 2023, the materials were donated to the Ottawa Jewish Archives. In October 2022, Archivist Teigan Goldsmith, Walter Hendelman, and Myra McFarlane began an oral history project where Walter and other founders/community members were interviewed on the history of ORH. Copies were added to the Archives as well as given to the ORH community.

History / Biographical
Akiva High School is an important part of the educational history of the Jewish community in Ottawa. The school first opened its doors in July of 1979 as a part of the Ottawa Talmud Torah Board (OTTB) of Jewish education, under the name Ottawa Talmud Torah Evening High School. The school was closely related to the Ottawa Talmud Torah Afternoon school, which provided classes for students prior to the eighth grade. In July of 1981, the school adopted a new name: Akiva Evening High School. In 1994, Akiva separated from the OTTB and became an independent school. Unfortunately, the school was forced to close its doors in 2007, after attempts at joining with Yitzhak Rabin High School in the early 2000s failed.

History / Biographical
The Human Rights Committee of the Parliamentary Spouses Association was founded by Penny Collenette in the 1982 in response to the harsh treatment of refusniks in the Soviet Union. Refusnik were an individual, typically Soviet Jews, who were denied permission to emigrate by the Soviet Government, usually to Israel. The Parliamentary Spouses Association was a group of spouses, mostly women, of Canada's Parliamentarians and included all parties. The group was not originally activist in nature prior to the Human Rights Committee. The committee formed after Sharon Sholzberg-Gray brought brought up the story of Vladimir Tsukerman being denied emigration to Israel to be with his family. The story resonated with Penny Collenette as his young child and hers were both 7 at the time. The group, consiting of 6 members with Penny as the head, persuaded all spouses of members of Parliament and seven provincial Premier's wives to sign a peitition, demanding the release of Vladimir Tsukerman. The petition was sent to Soviet president Leonid Breshnew with more than 200 signatures in July 1982, but they received no response. This did not discourage the groups efforts. They continued advocating for the release of Soviet Jews, reaching out to other groups and governments for support.

History / Biographical
Agudath Achim Congregation was created December 16, 1946. In 1947 the congregation obtained a building at 15 - 17 Harvey Street in the Town of Perth, Ontario. The Jewish Community used one half of the building as its synagogue and rented out the other half as a residence. History / Biographical
Beth Shalom West Congregation started as a satellite synagogue of Beth Shalom Congregation on Chapel Street to fill the need for an Orthodox synagogue in the Greenbank and Baseline area of western Ottawa. On May 3, 1980, the first West End service was led by Rabbi Basel Herring and attended by a small group of Jews in the cafeteria of Sir John A. MacDonald High School. Other functions were held in private homes or nearby public locations. As the group grew in size so did the dream of a permanent facility and on June 1982 the first plans for a building were unveiled. Along with these plans came a price tag of $674,000 and a fund raising campaign. Although the members and community were receptive, it quickly became apparent that west end community could not raise adequate funding for this structure. By November 1983, a Project Management Committee was formed with the goal of devising a building which could house the needs of the congregation and fall within financial boundaries. After considering a number of options and estimates provided by architect Joe Liff, the design of the present structure was created. A central Craig Henry site was chosen for a new synagogue on Chartwell Avenue and the property was donated by developers Jack and Irving Aaron. Over 400 people attended the ceremonial ground breaking ceremony. The dedication and official opening followed in September 1986. On June 3, 2008, the congregation gained independence and officially became Congregation Beit Tikva of Ottawa. The present sanctuary reflects the Orthodox nature of the congregation, including a women’s section defied by a raised floor and wooden Mechitzah. The memory of the Lowertown synagogues is reflected not only in the position of the central Bimah but in the inclusion of the Adath Jeshurun/ Ottawa Chrvra Kadisha’s original Aron Kodesh (Torah Arc) which was installed in February 1999. Rabbi Dr. Basil Herring served as the congregation’s first religious official; Rabbi Michael Orelowitz served from August 1982 to June 1983; Rabbi Sonnenschein joined the congregation in summer of 1983 and became the first full time rabbi in 1989. Rabbi Howard Finkelstein became the congregation’s rabbi August 8th, 1991 to remains in this position to the present day. Chazan Yair Subar is the Musical leader of Beit Tikvah of Ottawa and has been serving the congregation since June 2008.

History / Biographical
Rabbi Roy Tannenbaum, formerly of Agudath Israel Congregation, initiated the idea for an egalitarian Conservative synagogue. Early supporters included Morris Schnitzer and Leah Schnitzer, Steve Sugar and Chris Sugar as well as Irwin Brodo and Fenja Brodo. By September, 1979, Adath Shalom was officially affiliated with the United Synagogue Of America (now called the United Synagogues of Conservative Judaism), and it was welcomed as a member of the Jewish Community Council of Ottawa. The first service was held on July 22, 1978, in the Greenbank Public School library and the first president Michael Berns was elected in August 1978. Prayer books were stored in Greenbank School lockers and the Sefer Torah was initially borrowed from Beth Shalom Synagogue. The ark and bimah were stored in the school’s storage area. Other space was rented for High Holidays. Founding principles included more equal participation of women in the service and by February 1982, women were welcomed to participate as part of the minyan. Only after a number of years and many different chazanim and rabbis did congregates take on the responsibility of leasing space for services for the High Holy Days. At the Annual General Meeting in 1990, the congregation approved a move to the Broadview Campus of the Jewish Community Centre and the first service was held at Hillel Academy chapel in 1993.
