- History / Biographical
- This free speech case began in July 1994, when the Canadian Jewish Congress (CJC) brought a formal complaint against veteran journalist Doug Collins and the North Vancouver newspaper The North Shore News, for an allegedly anti-Jewish column on the "Schindler's List" motion picture, charging them with violating British Columbia's amended Human Rights Act. Specifically CJC cited a March 1994 column, "Hollywood Propaganda" (reprinted in the May-June 1994 Journal), in which Collins referred to the much-hyped movie as "Swindler's List" and "hate literature in the form of films." He also wrote that "the Jewish influence is the most powerful in Hollywood," and dismissed the fabled "six million" Holocaust figure as "nonsense." In November 1996 the British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal rejected CJC's complaint against Collins and his publisher. The Tribunal found that the opinion piece, which took aim at Holocaust claims, did not violate a provincial "anti-hate" law. (Written with material from the Institute for Historical Review, http://www.ihr.org/jhr/v17/v17n1p-2_Weber.html.) The lawyer for CJC was Gerry Cuttler, who later became a CJC officer. A subsequent complaint was made by Harry Abrams (of Bnai Brith,) who won.

Never before in this province had a member of the media been forced to defend his published remarks in front of a human rights tribunal. The CJC case against Doug Collins and the North Shore Free Press was indeed a hallmark case." (quoting Michael Silber, from the CJC Paciific Region publication Human Rights and Discriminatory Publications, 2001.).

- The National Archives of the Canadian Jewish Congress (now called the Alex Dworkin Canadian Jewish Archives) aims to acquire and preserve documentation on the myriad facets of the Jewish presence in Canada and Quebec. It is in this light that the Archives of the Canadian Jewish Congress set up the project Oral History of the Sephardic community in February 1988. Marie Berdugo-Cohen was engaged to interview various people of the Sephardic Jewish community settled in Montreal and its surroundings. Mrs. Berdugo-Cohen was born in Morocco. After settling in Quebec, she co-wrote, with her daughter Yolande Cohen and with Yossi Levy, the book Juifs Marocains: Témoignages d'une immigration moderne, published in 1987. Mrs. Berdugo-Cohen passed away in Montreal in 1991.
- Custodial History
- This collection of interviews was created with the assistance of a grant from Employent and Immigration Canada in 1988.
- Notes
- Availability of other formats: As of February 2016 all of the interviews have been digitized as WAV and WMA files. Video clips have been made containing excerpts from some of the recordings (eg. Simone Harrosh, Meyer Benhaim).General note: After completing the digitization of this collection, a six minute audio montage was created featuring several of the interviewees speaking about their adaptation to life in Canada.

- History / Biographical
- Mr. Stan Cytrynbaum, a Montreal lawyer, was president of the CJC Committee for Ethiopian Jewry. He was also active in the Jewish Vocational Service, AJCS (Allied Jewish Community Services, now Federation CJA), and other Jewish organizations. Along with Edit Kuper and Mark Zarecki, who participated in all aspects of the Committee, under Cytrynbaum's direction the Committee for Ethiopian Jewry raised funds to provide aid to Ethiopian Jews in Ethiopia and Israel and to help in their absorption once they emigrated to Israel or Canada. They also worked actively to enable them to emigrate. The committee disseminated information, held public meetings, arranged speaking tours of Ethiopian leaders, organized petitions and visits to Ethiopia, and sought Canadian government intervention. Cytyrnbaum was chairman of Canadian Friends of Ethiopian Jews in Israel, which, among other projects, ran the Ethiopian Jewish Heritage Centre, which trained young Ethiopians to become teachers and religious leaders within their community. Mr. Cytrynbaum is married to the former Sandra Wainberg, who was also actively involved in the plight of Ethiopian Jewry, so much so that the couple adopted a 14-year-old Ethiopian Jewish girl who lived with them and their three children for seven years. The Committee for Ethiopian Jewry was among the organizations which raised awareness in North America and Israel of the plight of Ethiopia's Jews. This helped to lead to the major airlifts of Ethiopian Jewry by the Israeli government - Operations Moses (1984) and Solomon (1991) - which succeeded in bringing approximately 8,000 and 14,000 people respectively to Israel. The CJCCEJ and its sister groups were also instrumental in aiding in the absorption of the Ethiopian Jews into Israeli society.
