A moderate liberal, he was a founder of the German Democratic Party and an advocate of assimilation for German Jews. Hated by the far right, Rathenau was assassinated in 1922 by extreme German nationalists. His books were banned in Nazi Germany after 1933 and the mass burning of 'un-German literature'.
