- Lison Chocron and Raphael Mergui talk with Matthias Rioux on CKAC call-in radio show Quebec Aujourd'hui. Alternating with Ms. Chocron's fellow male activists/organizers of Sephardic origin as they critique the pros and cons of doing the show. Topics of discussion include: francophone Jews in Quebec, their failure to support Bill 22, Jewish stereotypes in Quebec presented by Rioux, minority status, marriage patterns of Sephardic Jews versus English Jews in Quebec, JIAS, Canadian Jewish Congress, and various activities and goals of francophone Jewish organizations, a short history of the first Jews to Quebec and their dilemma between Catholic and Protestant groups, social problems of adaptation and assimilation to the existing Jewish establishment and Quebec integration.

- A group of 7 to 8 Moroccan Jewish men at Casa Pedro discuss the pros and cons of various aspects of their experiences in trying to integrate into Quebec society. Much joking. Some, more integrated than others, explain their firsthand accounts. They touch upon the taboo of intermarriage, the specific problems of being seen as Jews versus as Moroccans, the need to find a sense of belonging, comparisons with Ontario's Sephardic Jews who blended in with the English, and some unanswered questions about their place in Quebec, should it become independent. The sequence ends with their playing a video game and walking as a group down a street in the evening. Disappointing both in content and general comprehension, but one or two revealing details can be assumed from this collection of representative Moroccan men.

- 1C: Various shopkeepers recount the reasons they are in Canada, the amount of time since their arrival, and their background in several takes before their shop windows. They are: Jacques Elharrar (?) of Boucherie Select (kosher), six years in Canada, 35 years old, occupation butcher; George Cohen, optician, ten years in Canada; Nissim Loeub of Loueb Jewelry and Watches, three years in Canada though he holds the honour of working for the Palace of Morocco in crafting swords for the king -- he holds an example of his craftsmanship - worked as a jeweller since 1935; Maurice Cohen, men's barber, ten years in Canada; Elefair (?) David, owner of a travel agency and combination women's hair salon for three years; Kahone Salomon, "epicier" in front of his shop, Market Kahone, specializing in Moroccan spices for eight years. 2C: Four merchants discuss how long they have been here and why they like Canada, how long they have had their shops, and their appreciation of Canada's liberty compared to their Moroccan past. Simplest and clearest statements of shop owners. Most of the other material loses sync sound, rambling, not particularly articulate.

- Reels marked Mme. Amzallag -- suggests either the counsellor or the client -- a woman with a hat seen from the back confusedly recounts her Moroccan marriage and subsequent separation after being in Canada for ten years with two children. Her social values as a Moroccan and those of Quebec culture have presumably come into conflict.

- Beautiful Moroccan chanting and Hebrew prayers of the minyan gathered for the circumcision. The baby is brought out in the customary long robe by the father and passed to the mohel, the man who will perform the procedure. As prayers continue, the camera zooms in on the tiny penis being prepared. Prayers continue without image and resume with Jacques Bensimon asking a French-Canadian woman for her impressions. Then people eating from a long table of food. Cutaway reel shows the mohel sterilizing his instruments, close-up of the baby, various guests and a bleached-blond woman, presumably the mother, feeding a baby bottle of milk to calm the child. The whole sequence is choppy. More footage of waiting guests, then leaving.

- While sitting around a table, four young Moroccan Jewish men at a youth centre talk about their father's progress in finding work and recount their own frustrations adapting to the education system, their misdeeds as gesture of rebellion leading to a collective theft. The last few shots of them are outside as they walk away at night on the street. These are the delinquents referred to in canister P-0160-36. This is a sequence referring to Protestant, rather than francophone, schooling at Northmount, though it is missing in the out-takes we have.

- On the eve of the sixth anniversary of the Centre communautaire juif (CCJ) [the label on the film gives the reference]. A brief introduction by Michel Chocron, president of the Sephardic Community, leads to a much lengthier talk by James Dahan (?), director of the CCJ, who helps explain the two francophone groups, the District and the Y, and how they fused into one. He explains the no-smoking policy begun at Le District and continued at the Y group. Sitting among other groups at the meeting, Mr. Dahan gives elaborate and convoluted explanations of the bureaucratic structure that has helped to build the CCJ, his leadership and its pressures, and the role he plays in regard to various groups. Among the initial festivities in the first four minutes, a giant fake cake is brought out and the congregation sings Happy Birthday.

Dr. Jean-Claude Lasry, Elias Malka, Dr. Gerard Barbeau of the CECM, and three other unidentified men to discuss new building space for the growing number (375) of francophone Sephardic Jewish students newly enrolled. Dr. Barbeau mentions what has already been provided for the Jewish school in terms of facilities and furniture by the Catholic School Board. Dr. Lasry gives a defence of the school's needs, but clip is shortened.

- Director of Jewish Community Services Mr. Manuel Batshaw responds to numerous questions regarding the Sephardic Jewish community from North Africa and how they were received by Montreal's community and its leaders. Bensimon's questions suggest a real schism between the two communities and how they saw each other. Batshaw confides about some of the difficulties that both sides had to overcome for a better dialogue and responds to questions about the impact of Maimonides School built exclusively through Sephardic support, the francophone element as to how it effected changes at Jewish summer camps, and other related issues. Some of the sections of the visual interview are missing though the sound is in sync.

- In a meeting of the Association Sepharade Francophone (ASF), Dr. Jean-Claude Lasry, Elias Malka, Lison Chocron and several unidentified board members have a heated debate about their options for raising money for the ever-growing Maimonides School. They debate the political and social fallout of going their own way in fundraising and establishing their own community centre in light of their frustrations with the various existing English Jewish institutions. A fundamental shift results in a split in the board's thinking. Lasry leads the position to split, with Lison Chocron by his side, while more conservative leaders such as Malka, seem to try to reconcile themselves to the situation.

- At the 2nd Congres de la Federation Sepharade Canadienne held in Montreal June 7 to 8, 1975, several speakers vie for the opportunity to address the gathering in a heated debate that threatens to split the community into two opposing camps. Some of the speakers (recognized) include: Raphael Mergui, sociologist, who wants to present a working paper from his group on the social problems that Sephardic Jews in Israel face. Another sociologist, Michael Elbaz, also addresses the assembly, as does another Mr. Mergui, who represents a group of former Israelis and Sephardic Jews who emigrated to Canada and their concerns for families still in Israel. The discussion is passionate and a split in the community is palpable. The Israeli speaker, in a motion of solidarity with fellow Sephardic Jews in Israel, renounces his Israeli citizenship and that of his group's members before the Consulate General of Israel, who is on stage with the other invited guests and speakers. This same debate heats up again on P-0160-22 as the reports, presentations and audience reactions to the meeting heat up as well.

- As in P-0160-21, the second day (June 8, 1975) of the 2nd Congres de la Federation Sepharade Canadienne, the re-election of Elias Malka as its president is followed by speakers from away, such as Andre Narmounian (?). Raphael Mergui presents a series of motions to the assembly in order to draw attention to the plight of Sephardic Jews in Israel. He is subsequently warned about, and the assembly discourages him from, addressing any negative comments on Israel in public, as these may be picked up by neo-Nazi groups and others who are against the State. The other Mr. Mergui, who represents Israeli Sephardic Jewish immigrants, also confirms his allegiance to the State in an attempt to defuse concerns. A split within the community is evident, seeing how heated the debate is and how adamant both sides seem to be with regard to maintaining control over an assembly that threatens to disintegrate into chaos.

- Most of this material is end or start marks for sync sound/camera shot during the Federation (see P-0160-21 and P-0160-22 for fuller clips of speakers). In this reel, there are glimpses of James Dahan, Raphael Mergui, Charles Delmar and re-elected president Elias Malka, who is honoured by the community and awarded a gift of thanks. Some motions are proposed and voted upon, and there still remains a sense of chaotic disagreement between various factions in the community and its speakers. In the smaller Roll 2, Elias Malka, the elected leader of Montreal's Sephardic community, and Raphael Mergui, sociologist and critic of the Jewish establishment, both give their take on the situation of Israel's Sephardim - neither position is in the final film.

- Hebrew prayers around the Passover seder table of Dr. Lasry's family, possibly brother and his children, as they perform the rituals typical of Sephardic rendition of this time-honoured ritual. Towards the end, the Bibilouya (?) blessings are sung, typical of Sephardic ritual, and some Arabic chanting too. This is a reel of sync marks where the image flashes a light on the tape recorder to be able to reset the sound in sync with the image. Most of this footage is random, technically unusable for the purposes intended -- out-takes surely.

- Notes
- Jean-Claude Lasry meets with francophone Quebec educators and discusses a number of social and cultural differences that have occurred in Sephardic families in relation to patriarchy and women's role in the family. Unfortunately, much of the images of this extended interview of question-and-answer is missing, although the sound seems intact. In the process of his discussion, he defends how Maimonides School helps Moroccan immigrants who might otherwise get mislaid within the Protestant schools, and he argues two such cases by example.
