Scope and Content
The main part of the collection consists of a large scrapbook compiled by Wilfred Gallay's wife Birdie (Silver) Gallay which includes academic articles and works written by Dr. Gallay from 1928 to approximately 1973. Among the early articles are documents printed by the National Research Council of Canada and reprinted from the Canadian Journal of Research. Gallay's research at this time pertained primarily to aspects of physical and colloid chemistry as they applied to various compounds and solutions. From 1950 onward the album includes articles written by Dr. Gallay that are more oriented towards the chemistry of pulp and paper, the focus of his career. In these, Gallay writes primarily about his research findings related to improving the technology and science of paper-making. A pamphlet from a conference that Gallay presented at is included. All of the articles are in English except for one in German. The collection also includes a folder of papers assembled by Wilfred Gallay's son Ralph Gallay, Ph.D.. that features Wilfred Gallay's academic bibliography compiled by his wife Birdie (Silver) Gallay (see PDF link below), various curriculum vitae, and newsclippings and obituaries containing biographic information about both Wilfred and Birdie Gallay. In addition, 2 digital photographs; one of Wilfred Gallay and his wife Birdie (then Birdie Silver) at the time of his Ph.D. graduation from McGill University in 1930, and one of Wilfred and Birdie Gallay in 1977. Both images were computer enhanced by Wilfred's grandson Michael Gallay and were donated via email.

History / Biographical
Dr. Wilfred Gallay was an internationally known scientist. He was born in Hawkesbury, Ontario in 1906, the fifth of six children of Lithuanian Jewish immigrants. The family moved to Calgary, where he received his elementary schooling, completed Grade 13 and graduated from the Provincial Normal School in Calgary with a First Class Teacher's Certificate at the age of fourteen. In rural Alberta schools Wilfred Gallay taught pupils who were often older than he was and became principal of the Blairmore School when he was only sixteen. He attended the University of Alberta for a year, and then entered McGill University, earning his passage east guarding cattle on the CPR. He earned a B.A. from McGill with First Class Honours in Chemistry (1927), an M.Sc. (1928) and a Ph.D. in Chemistry (1930). Dr. Gallay received Post-Ph.D. training in Colloid and Surface Chemistry at the University of Leipzig and at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute in Berlin. After marrying Birdie Silver in 1932, the couple had four children: Tilya (Mrs. Eric Helfield BCL), Pauline (Mrs. Jerome Becker DDS, MS), Ralph Gallay Ph.D., and Susan (Mrs. Michael Newman). Dr. Wilfred Gallay was head of the Section on Colloids and Plastics at the National Research Council of Canada from 1932 to 1944 where some of his research involved the development of superior war materiel. He later served as a consultant to various industries in Canada and the U.S. and as an expert witness in patent litigation cases. From 1953 to 1972, he was Director of Research and a Member of the Board of Directors of the E.B. Eddy Co. in Hull, Quebec. Dr. Wilfred Gallay wrote approximately 85 scientific papers on various aspects of colloid and surface chemistry primarily as it applied to the manufacture of pulp and paper as well as chapters in books, and held a number of patents. Many of Dr. Gallay's publications were jointly authored with his staff he mentored and supervised, graciously featuring their names before his own. Most of his published papers were assembled into an album by his wife Birdie who also typed the original manuscripts. This album is a featured part of the present collection. Wilfred was a frequent and widely invited lecturer and featured speaker at numerous professional conferences on this continent and in Europe. Dr. Gallay served as Vice-President of the Society of the Plastics Industry. He was Chairman of the Research, Patent and Industrial Advisory Committees, and a Member of the Executive Council, Technical Section, of the Canadian Pulp and Paper Association. He was Chairman of the Pulp and Paper Section of the Applied Chemistry Division, President of the Applied Chemistry Division and Secretary General of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) from 1971 to 1975, with a permanent staff in Oxford, England. He represented IUPAC as a member of the Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment (SCOPE), Chairman of the SCOPE Commission on Determination of Pollutants, a member of its Commission on Global Monitoring and Chairman of the Canadian National Committee for SCOPE. Dr. Gallay earned numerous educational, scholarly and professional medals and awards in the course of his education and career. He died in 1995 in Toronto, where he lived the last two years of his life which was spent mostly in Ottawa.
