Blanket consists of small square patches stitched together to form a large square blanket. Concentration camp blanket. Narrative: This blanket was issued to prisoner in a concentration camp, it was used by Sonia Aronowicz during a death march. Sonia Aronowicz was born in 1915 in Vilnius, Poland (today Lithuania). Her family had lived in Vilnius for many generations. She was married to a lawyer named Misha Aronowicz and studied to become an accountant. In 1941, after the Nazis invaded the region, Sonia and her family were sent to the Vilnius ghetto. The ghetto was liquidated in September 1943 and men and women were separated. This was the last time Sonia saw her husband Misha and her younger brother Ariye. Her parents went into hiding. Sonia was deported along with her friend, Miriam and Miriam’s sister-in-law, Minya. The three of them made a pact to always stay together. This gave them strength. Together they worked successively in the concentration camps of Riga-Kaiserwald and Riga-Strasdenhof in Latvia, and Stutthof and Bromberg-Ost (in Bydgoszcz), Poland. Their work was very demanding, they built rails for trains and hauled wood to build barracks. Sonia was then sent on a death march and was eventually liberated by Soviet soldiers in Pomorze, Poland.

Nine-branched metal lamp with removable shamash on a hinge at the center. The branches are ribbed and curved, all branching from the central stem. A Star of David sits at the centre slightly above the branches, right behind the shamash. The foot is a three-level tiered octagonal pedestal decorated with relief carvings. Narrative: Sophia van Dam (born 1874-04-08, maiden name van Hessen, Dutch nationality) and her husband Levie van Dam (b. 1866-11-02, Dutch nationality) lived at Hooftstr. 176, in Leens (Groningen province, The Netherlands). They owned a clothing store which they sold when they retired. In 1943, the Germans came to arrest them. They were to be sent to the Westerbork transit camp (Drente province). The Van Dams were already in their seventies and Mrs Van Dam was not well. They were given two weeks’ notice before their transfer to Westerbork. During that time, they distributed their belongings to their non-Jewish friends and neighbours, for safekeeping. This Hanukkah menorah was given to their neighbors Jelte and Jantina Bolt; their daughter Henderika (the donor's mother) was nine years old and remembers the gift. The van Dams were committed to Westerbork transit camp (The Netherlands) on 1943-03-09, and transferred East on 1943-03-17 (destination not indicated - cf. Arolsen Archives). It is believed they were deported to the Sobibor killing centre and killed there, or that they may have died during the transport. Jelte and Jantina Bolt kept this menorah throughout the war and then gave it to their daughter, Henderika, who brought it with her when she immigrated to Canada in 1953. Henderika then gave it to her own daughter, Linda.

Notes
Glass bottle with a wooden stopper. Inside the bottle is a crucifixion scene showing figure of a man (Jesus) hanging from a crucifix. The man has painted yellow skin with bits of black hair and beard. The crucifix is painted in orange and silver. There are also four tall tower-like structures painted orange, yellow, blue, and silver; two on the right of the crucifix and two on the left. A silver ladder is positioned under the crucified man. The whole is set into a silver base in two pieces. Narrative: The bottle was handcrafted by a Ukrainian prisoner of war in the Ban Saint-Jean camp. Many of the Soviet prisoners formed close ties with the local farmers, on whose farmers they were sent to work. They created handicrafts such as bottles, baskets, and wooden toys to give as gifts or to trade for food. This bottle was given to Anna Kremer, who lived in Boulay (village close to the camp) by a prisoner to whom she had given food and shoes. Many examples of such bottles and other handmade gifts were given to villagers in appreciation for their help to the prisoners of war. An estimated 22,000 Soviet prisoners of war died at Ban Saint-Jean of malnutrition and exhaustion between 1941-1944.
